Internet Explorer Problems...HELP!

Ok, I need a little computer advise from some savvy dopers…

About a week ago my Internet Explorer started acting up. Whenever I click on a link in a page, or try to open a new page when viewing another, IE ACTS like it’s going to open the page, but all I get is a totally blank IE page, as if it’s not connecting, etc. I’m running XP, on 1 year old Compaq, with a fairly current version of IE. I tried downloading an updated version of IE, but it didn’t work, and told me the computer was unable to access the site???

Anyone have any ideas? I’ve never encountered this before. I’m not a total computer idiot, but I’m not sure how to fix the problem. It seems like something was changed or a file was deleted.

Also, if you aren’t particularly attached to IE, you might be inclined to try other browsers such as Opera or Mozilla. The install is easy and I’ve heard many praises from people who switch from IE to either.
