What is wrong with my computer?

For some reason, Internet Explorer is not working right. I can view SOME webpages, but when I go to others, it says, “Error in some MSBLAHBLAHBLAH.DLL file” or whatever, then it closes.

Which is why I’m using netscape to access the SDMB.

I hope nothing is seriously wrong-I really cannot afford it at the moment.

What IE version and what OS? Also, it might be helful if you can tell us the exact filename in the error dialog.

Without knowing more, I’ll suggest you try Windows Update and get the latest build of IE 6.0.

Windows ME, um…lemme see…

(Stupid question-where do I look to see what IE version I have)

:o

In IE…Help > About Internet Explorer.

From the IE pane, go to Help on the top toolbar, down to the bottom, About Internet Explorer, and your version along with installed patches should come up.

Version 5.50.4134.0100

Ok, what about the DLL mentioned in the error dialog? Then I can search for specific issues.

Okay, lemme try and trigger it so I can write it down…

Which I did-restart that is. Twice.

sigh

IMHO, you’re a few patches behind. I’d try downloading the latest before changing to IE6, Guin.

Also try the IE repair tool, as explained in this Microsoft support article.

Hi Guinastasia
Along with the excellent advice already given…If it is infact Explorer rather than IExplore … you may want to download and run Ad-aware. Let it rid you of what it finds.

Thanks guys! I’ll check these out after dinner tonight-my grandparents just got here.

I’ll let you know if it works!

smooches

Okay, that article is very confusing-could someone help?
(I hope I’m not bothering anyone!)

Hi again!
How to use the IE repair feature?
Simply go to your control panel…
Then add/remove…
Then look for Microsoft Internet Explorer…
Click remove.
You should be presented with a dialogue box that asks if you want to remove…or repair.
You’re going to choose to repair.

That help?

YES! Thank you!

(I’m also trying Ad Aware, after I move some stuff to my D drive)

I really wish I could afford a new computer.

You’re most welcome.
One step at a time…
Were you able to do the repair? Or follow the instructions?

Don’t move things for Ad-aware’s benefit…it’s actually better if you leave everything as it is. You don’t want to keep the spyware that it finds.

No, it won’t let me-it only says, 'Add A component"-the other boxes aren’t available.

Damn you, microsoft!

Don’t worry about it.
Go ahead and download ad-aware.
Click on “Check for updates now”
Then click on “Connect”
Let it download any updates it finds.
Click finish.
Click start
Click next
When the scan is done…
Click “Next”
Right click on any one of those boxes, and choose “select all objects”
Click “Next”
Click “Ok”
Exit the program
See if that makes any difference.

I did that-no difference.

The problem could be with the nut in front of the monitor…sorry, just kidding.

I’d go to microsoft.com and get all of the latest updates to your OS and browser. This could take a while if you’ve never done it before because some patches/updates can’t load until other ones are added first and you have to restart after each time you load something.

Windows ME is a disaster. If you can, update to XP.
