computer question

I have a 2 meg file I want to get from one computer to another. The “from” computer does not have internet access, and the only drive it has is a floppy disc drive. Well, it has a CD drive but not a writable one. The “to” computer does have internet access, as well as a writable CD drive.

So, I tried copying using floppies, but it will only let me copy files up to the size of one disk - ie 1.4 megs. My file is .6 megs to big.

I even tried physically dividing the file in two using wordpad, but it’s too large - to highlight all the text would take a very long time. (probably hours it seems!)

So, does anyone know of a way to get big ole files from one computer to another in the absence of writable CDs or internet access?

When you see these words you’ll know you’re in the right place:
Thank you for searching. Your search is in progress and you will be taken to the results in a moment. Thank you for your patience.

Computer Q: How do I save 2MB file on 2 1.44MB floppies?

Go to http://www.winzip.com and download WinZip (it’s free).

You can fit WinZip on a floppy disk and install it on both computers.

On the computer with the large file tell WinZip to save the compressed file to your floppy drive (make sure a blank disk is in the drive). DO NOT zip the file and then copy it to the floppy drive…the zip file must be created for starters on the floppy drive. If the floppy runs out of space WinZip will automatically prompt for another disk.

Go to the other computer and unzip the file there. Prompts will walk you through what disks it needs when.

BTW…it is quite possible that WinZip will compress the file enough that it will fit on one floppy without spanning to another disk. If this is a straightforward text file from WordPad I’d bet money on it. Text files are VERY compressible.

The best way I can think of in your situation is to download Winzip or HJSplit or another program that splits files and use that to split the file. It will fit on two floppies. To rejoin the file make sure after you download the installer to transfer it to the “to” computer and install it on there as well…hope it helps!

Quickest way might be to zip it. Winzip allows you to make multiple disk zip files (look up “disk spanning”).

Zipping won’t make the file any smaller - it’s an mp3…

If the file is not too big you can still use floppies and
the neat AXMAN program. It will cut your file into the desired portion, and assemble it afterwards.

Thanks for the tip regarding Winzip and how to save to multiple disks, Whack-a-mole.

Thanks to the other person as well about the advice regarding winzip, sorry I don’t remember your name.

Realblaze, you don’t have to be that way. What was I supposed to put in the search engine? “Copy large file to small computer”? Or something like that? Maybe it would have worked, but I’m sure you can see why I thought at the time taht such a search wouldn’t work. There are no easy keywords for this problem.

Thanks to everyone else who responded as well!

Lot’s of people responded while I was typing…

The winzip multiple-disk-archive thing is working. 'Preciations!

Kris, because the same thing was asked last time at 09-25-2001 03:34 PM, which you can see from the link provided…[sub]sheesh[/sub]

thing is, the computer you copy it to also must be able to unzip it…this is tricky, thats why you create a self extracting zip with it…

or its as tricky as installing winzip on that system as well…

kinoons, I have Zip Magic & winzip would not extract it when I loaded it, so I had to create a self extracting zip, this worked just beautifully & it would also extract on any computer whether it has winzip or not.

Realblaze, you didn’t understand what I was saying.

Here’s the deal. You said I should have searched for the question. I am saying there were, as far as I could see, no easy keywords to search with. Yes, I know because you pointed it out in your first post that the question has been asked before. I am saying that when I posted my question, I did not know, and had no way of knowing, taht the question had been asked before. I often do a search before posting, but this time, I could think of no good keywords, so I didn’t do so. No big deal. You apparantly were able to find good keywords. This is commendable. It does not give you the go-ahead to be rude about the fact that others did not follow suit.

Furthermore, you could have just pointed me to the link, but no, you were snide and condescending about it, which is what drew my comments. Next time you find yourself in this situation, just help the person. Don’t try to slap them over the head with your superiority and their inferiority. Do you understand?
