Computer won't finish booting from disk.

A couple of months ago I decided to try to restore my computer with the discs that came with it. I rebooted the system with the disc in and hit the space bar when I was prompted to “hit any key to boot from CD”. After I did that it said windows was loading some files and then, very briefly (less than a second), I could see the pointer and a blue desktop and then the screen goes black and it just sits. It wasn’t reading from the disc and the HDD was blinking very slowly. I rebooted this thing and changed every setting I could think of to make it work but it did the same thing every time I rebooted no matter what. I thought I had a bum recovery disc and forgot about it.

So today I got the Windows 7 beta and it’s doing the same exact thing with that! It says windows is loading some files and then I see a couple of colorful windows balls and then BAM, black screen and no control.

I have no idea what to do from this point forward. I’ve tried everything I can think of. I took all the hardware out of the system that didn’t come with it so it would be JUST like when it came out of the box and it doesn’t help.

Anyone have any clue how I can make this thing work???

How long are you leaving it? Try leaving it over lunch.

You could try refreshing the BIOS. It’s also possible that the drive is flaky, although I wouldn’t without trying simpler, cheaper remedies first.

Lichtman’s going in the right direction.
Reset BIOS.
Reseat data cabling for drive device.
Run stand-alone tests for HDD failure.
Replace motherboard.
