I just re-installed Windows 98SE on a friends PC, fresh re-format. I installed all the drivers (including mobo drivers) and Win98SE still refuses to power the PC down. I get the screen when shutting down that “Windows is shutting down your PC” or whatever, but it just sits… never shuts off. Ideas? Its not the end of the world incase I can’t fix it, the old switch on the back works fine and it doesn’t even do a scandisk when I restart. I can’t find any appropriate settings in the BIOS that could do it. I tried looking at the ASUS website, but for some reason I am not able to connect to it, so no luck.

I’m assuming it did before. It sounds like Windows has shut down, but either is not sending the power off signal or can’t send it. The setting you are looking for is ACPI, which should be enabled in BIOS by default. Its been to long since I’ve dealt with Windows 9X, so I forget if power management is in the control panel. If it is, check the advanced tab for the power off setting. In XP its defaulted to “shutdown computer”, but 98 may be different.
Another thing you can try is to disable the Windows “fast shutdown” feature. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, and choose System Information. Click on the Tools tab and choose System Configuration Utility. From the General tab, click on the Advanced button. On the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings screen, check the “disable fast shutdown” option.

Or RUN MSCONFIG. Same thing and that’s what most people know. I checked and my fast shutdown is disabled.
I was having serious brain lock and couldn’t remember MSCONFIG, but I did know how to get to it via System Information. Yours is definitely the better way to go.
ALso there were some issues with some motherboards that no real solution was found. I had one and the manufacturer said to just get to the shutting down screen, wait till no disk activity and shut it off.
FTR, Windows 9x does not support ACPI unless you use an (undocumented) setup switch. Advanced Power Management is all thats needed to perform this function on an ATX motherboard that supports it, however.
