Computers on Acid: weird pictures

When neural networks trained to recognize certain objects (animals, buildings, etc.) are set find them even when there are none. Or when their own output is fed back for multiple iterations.

It’s interesting how very similar many of those images are to things I’ve seen under the influence of psychedelics.

The prevalence of arched doorways that exist in the world must be greater than I would have expected.

I’ve done shit like that for years; didn’t know it was a “thing.”

From Yesterday

An interesting point: With the dumbbell example, where all of the images ended up also including a muscular arm, they say that their program failed to extract the essence of “dumbbell”. But one might argue that it did, in fact, extract that essence: It captured not only the form of the dummbell itself, but also its function. A dumbbell isn’t just two heavy disks with a rod between: It’s two heavy disks with a rod between that is lifted by a muscular arm.

It looks like the art my aunt has been making for about 20 years.

She may have done some acid back in the 60s.

Totally. If I hadn’t known what they were, I’d assume they were “machine elves”.
