Computers on Ebay

I’m thinking of saving a buck and buying a computer on ebay. Specifically a Mac Pro. I’ve never used ebay before for an expensive purchase. Any tips on finding a good vendor, or even if it’s reccomended?

Make sure you check the feedback. That doesn’t mean just looking at the comments, but look at the prior auctions and make sure your guy is experienced selling this type of thing. If all his past auctions are for two dollar mildew-encrusted Star Wars paperbacks, be wary. But if he’s sold lots of computer equipment to good reviews, then fine.

Make sure the description is detailed and complete, including any irrelevant cosmetic damage to the case (it may be irrelevant, but it shows attention to detail.) Don’t hesitate to ask the seller informed questions about the auction (they’ll be happy to talk to a human that isn’t from Nigeria.)

I’ve bought and sold a lot on ebay. As friedo recommends, check feedback. Also, make sure he has a DOA return policy. Don’t ever buy anything AS-IS / untested unless you are handy, and the price is right. Mac Pros are new, and don’t have the water-leakage problem that G5’s have, so if it’s working, it should go on working.

For an expensive item, I usually try to make sure the item is local to me and I can physically pick it up, bringing cash in hand.
