Concert etiquette: sit or stand

I have no interest in the argument since I never go to concerts but by wouldn’t this mean nobody should ever stand because eventually you’ll get to the front row with nobody standing in front of them. So they should sit, so then the people behind them should sit and so on.

If the purpose of standing is primordial release, why does it matter whether anybody else is experiencing same?

Well, that’s the subject of this discussion. It comes down to finding a reasonable balance between primordial release and a desire to not have to stare at somebodies fat ass in front of you should you wish to sit during the performance.
It should be noted that there were a few lucky occasions where the tight fitting jeans in front of me were more entertaining than the view of the musicians

I’m in my forties now and don’t really have the energy to stand (and dance) for hours anymore, but if I’m being honest, all the best concerts I’ve ever attended were ‘standing’ concerts. There’s just more energy at the venue when everyone is standing and makes for a better experience.

This is partly why I hardly go to concerts anymore.

Personally, I’d like people to sit. I’d like there to be dancing areas. However, I saw the Wallflowers once at a sit down only venue. The ushers kept telling patrons to please sit down. Jacob Dylan, however kept telling people to stand up and dance. From an artists point of view, they might want this to feed off the energy.

Barbra Streisand’s legendary stage fright was exacerbated by people standing. She was singing “America the Beautiful” in one of her rare outdoor concerts . . . but she hadn’t counted on people standing in front of the teleprompters.

Sit. You have a seat for a reason.

Rammstein concert, Madison Square Garden a couple years back. I was banging the ticketmaster site from 5 minutes before til 5 minutes after the tickets went on sale, absolutely no way to get handicap seating tickets, called MSG ticket office, they were sold out before the fucking tickets went on sale. I spent the entire time with my chair folded in front of me crunching into my knees and unable to see anything because the jackasses in front of me and all around me stood the entire time. At least I got to hear them live. I would have loved to be able to actually watch them. The jackass in the MSG ticket office suggested that we buy a pair of $1000 tickets for a private box …

This past May, Eric Clapton at Royal Albert Hall. EVERYONE sat in their seats and politely clapped. I almost fell asleep because nobody was dancing or even moving in their seats. They did stand for the second encore but by that time I was over it all. I don’t want to stand for the entire concert, but for Pete’s sake people, get into the music and at least sway.

I read alot of comments on here before becoming a member…

I have to say that many of you don’t even belong in a rock concert.

WTH? You expect people to pay high prices for good seats and they need to sit? No way. I pay to enjoy myself. Waiting 20 yrs to see Pink Floyd is not going to keep me in my seat. What is wrong with you people? Just google a band of your choice…stay home, save money and sit. Who the h**l can remain seated during a Def Leppard or Pink Floyd show anyways? If you go to a rock concert with the intention of sitting all the way through… buy a ticket in the last row in a far section. Then you can watch the big screen, sit and still be able to knit. Let people have a good time. I, along with 90% of others, do not go to see a rock concert to sit and watch as if it is a movie. The performers want people to appreciate the show and the people who really like it, will be up and dancing and having a good time. You want to sit during a Rock Concert…stay home and listen to a cd. That way you will not ruin it for others. Expect people standing during a Rock concert. We are not there to just to watch, who can see much anyways? We go to have a good time. To be able to walk out and say. “Wow, that was awesome.” There is NO etiquette in a rock concert. The band will play better and most times longer when people are standing up and appreciating it.

EXACTLY! Those that want to remain in their seats all the way through, should stay home or go see a symphony. Rock concerts are meant to be enjoyed and meant to have people out of their seats. I would walk off the stage if people remained seated. It would be boring and insulting.

Now … that is boring and who wants to pay to go to a rock conert and sit? A rock band sees it as a failure when people remain seated… They actually don’t play as well as they could and just want to get through the show because their audience is boring and should be at home knitting.

no matter where… if you go see Def Leppard, The Who, Pink Floyd, or Bon Jovi, the band will play much better to please the audience if they see that people are appreciating it. I would walk off the stage if people sat through a show. People go to a rock concert to rock and have a great time. You sit at a theater or broadway show or a symphony, but you stand up and just do what is natural, at a rock concert.

LOL You should have stayed home or gone to a movie instead. Sitting during The Who concert? Seriously? Did you bring your knitting too? Might as well have. That is a ROCK concert… not a symphony.

Who told you to wait 20 years?

You should have seen them in '97, then you could have sat.
mmm

Wheelchair …

I would love to be able to get up and dance … fuck’s sake, I haven’t been able to dance with my husband in over 5 years …

Or, as Pete would say, “This is a fucking ROCK & ROLL concert, not a fucking TEA PARTY!”

Shirley Manson berated the audience at a Garbage concert I recently went to for not standing.

To paraphrase: “This might be our last tour, so try and fucking enjoy yourselves.”
