Concert Pitch --- A Debate

Will concert pitch continue to go higher? In the days of Mozart an A was 426, now it is 440. I have been told when tuning to error high, if you are going to error.

So will concert pitch continue to go higher, or will it stay where it is?

Concert pitch differs in different places (last I heard). It’s higher in the UK, lower in France. Where did you hear that Mozart used 426? No electronic tuners in those days!

In the current age of widespread delivery of music to the wide world, I suspect that 440 will become a standard eventually, and stay pretty much stable. That’s just a guess from no data.

According to what I’ve heard (from my college professor) 440 has been agreed upon due to the extreme stress that the added stress that the increased tension has put on older insturments that were not designed to take that much pressure. (And the number I recall is around 435 in Mozart’s days)

There is also something that involves playing with wind and brass sections but I don’t recall the reason.
