Concerts nobody else here has seen

I don’t think anyone has mentioned Rush yet. I saw them open for Ted Nugent in 1975.

Seen Rush several times. And I suspect many others here will say the same.

Here’s one: I’ve also seen Yes several times. And I am under no illusion that I’m alone on the SDMB in this. However, how many saw the specific offshoot ABWH? Saw 'em in September '89 in Mountain View, California. The show was broadcast live, and later released as the live album “An Evening of Yes Music Plus.”

Yep, I still got Alice Coltrane, Velvet Underground, and Gram Parsons.

Any Michael Franti fans? We see him whenever we can. At one show at the Carnegie Library in Homestead, he came down of the stage and danced with us (me and my gf). It was kind of cool, but he was drenched with sweat and hugged us both.

Yeah, I saw them in Boston back in the late 70s. Great show on the revolving circular stage.

How about Bela Fleck and the Flecktones? I saw them at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in the early 90s.

I saw Christian McBride at a small jazz club in Boston.

Anyone been to Preservation Hall in New Orleans to see the Preservation Hall Jazz Band?

Got another one. Does anybody remember Jeff Healy? He was a blind blues guitarist who played a regular guitar on his lap and broke into the scene around 1988 as a small sensation with his album “Can You See The Light”. Saw him around that time at the Zeche, Bochum, Germany. Great show. Sadly, he died very early.

He was hot for a minute when his version of Cohen’s “Hallelujah” became a posthumous hit (maybe it was in a movie?).

Are you sure you didn’t confuse him with Jeff Buckley? Because a song like “Hallelujah” really wasn’t Healy’s style, he played straight blues rock in the vein of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Jeff Buckley though had a hit with “Hallelujah” (don’t remember if it was posthumous) and also died young (he drowned IIRC, while Jeff Healy died of cancer).

I figured it wouldn’t take too long for someone to speak up!

I’ve seen them a bunch of times, probably a dozen. At least twice in Telluride. I’ve seen some of Bela’s other collaborations as well, including w/Edgar Meyer, Chick Corea, Toumani Diabate, and Bela’s Africa Project (can’t remember all the great musicians on that one).,

I saw him opening for Tom Cochrane and Red Rider on the Victory Day tour in the winter of 1988/89. Good show, amazing guitarist.

I saw Jeff Healey at the Park West in Chicago, 1989.

I saw Loudon Wainwright III in Johnson City, TN.

I caught them in '74 at Winterland, That was the night I shared a joint with David Bryon. (Someone next to me in the front row held up a joint to him, he took a toke, passed it back, and it was shared all around.)

Saw them on the “Lights Out Tour”. Another Winterland show, they opened for Rush.

UK: Saw them open for Jethro Tull, Oakland 1979.

A couple more possible “nobody else has seen” concerts from my list:

  • Greg Kihn Band 1979 @ Justin Herman Plaza Free KSAN show and San Jose State’s Morris Dailey Auditorium 1981.

  • Simon Townshend (Pete’s brother) @ Wolfgang’s 1984, Fresno 2007 (he filled in for opening act Rose Hill drive when their van broke down on the way from Reno) and Cafe du Nord 2013

I saw Rush on most of their tours starting from Hold Your Fire until the last one.

I’ve seen Yes multiple times. I’m not old enough to have seen them before 90125. I saw them during the Union tour when just about everyone who was ever in the band was there while I was in Germany and was able to get up right near the stage.

I’ll bet nobody else saw SMV (Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten) on their Thunder tour. You’d better like bass guitar for that one.

I saw Robert Plant and his Band of Joy, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, 2011.

It may have been as late as 91. Maybe we were at the same show. It felt like it was in the middle of nowhere but I don’t remember where it was.

I travel to the U.K. every few years and I try to see concerts over there, seems like a fun vacation activity. Before going to Cardiff a few years back I searched YouTube to check out the artists who were going to be in town when I was, and got hooked on a single by Alex Lahey, a rocker from Australia. I saw her and her band in a club on Womanby Street, in the shadow of the Castle. Blew me away. I’ve seen her again since, here in Toronto, and she’s been on the rise over the intervening years. Lahey’s doing festivals now, but if she makes a big breakthrough in North America, I’ll be able to say I saw her in a club that was literally smaller than my apartment.

It’s harder NOT to see him, as he has played with tons of prominent musicians. John Clayton is another prominent bassist I’ve seen, along with his son, pianist Gerald Clayton.

Oh, just thought of Jeff Hamilton, an outstanding jazz drummer who came to the Newport (Oregon) jazz weekend every year. A funny guy and jokester with a bit of a temper when he thought he was being challenged or made fun of.

Hey, in my case it surely was in the middle of nowhere, at the Mehrzweckhalle (isn’t that a fine word? It means all purpose hall, but it was basically a sports hall) in Birkelbach, Erndtebrück, Kreis Siegen-Wittgenstein (near the town of Siegen). Maybe 1,000 attending.

I still remember that Mick Box had put on a little weight, but his hair was still impressive.
