Saw Ute Lemper in a very small venue, doing a tribute to Marlene Dietrich. Lovely voice as always.
Ooh. Prolly at or near the top of the list of bands I wish I’d seen.
I’m sure several others have seen Prince. But back in 79? At ISU. What a wild show.
And I saw Jules and the Polar Bears open up for the Cars at the Illinois State Fair right about the same time. Boy, the crowd didn’t know what to make of EITHER group!
I almost saw them open for the Rolling Stones on the Steel Wheels tour (was that 1989?). But we went to the show with a friend of my wife’s, and this friend dilly-dallied around to the point where we arrived between acts. Missed their whole set but saw all of the Stones.
Bruce Cockburn - I know a large Canadian contingent here so that’s probably not unique.
I saw Stacey Earle in a bar in Fredricksburg in 1997
Janes Addiction who were supporting The Fields of the Nephilim in probably 88 at the Brixton Academy
I went to the Glastonbury festival a couple of times in the early 90s so saw a lot of probably obscure bands, but fuzzy memories.
I saw Living Color at Cabaret Metro
Am I the only one who saw the Stones with Mick Taylor in the lineup?
What year was it?
I never saw The Doors, but I saw a tribute band called The Next Doors. Their Jim Morrison stayed in character the entire time and was amazing. There was a guy there who saw The Doors and thought The Next Door’s Jim Morrison was better than the original.
One of my favorite bands, we’ve seen them many times. At one show I arrived very early and helped the venue’s crew set the stage (I’m friends with the owner).
One of the members of the band told me I looked familiar and I told him I’d seen the band many times. “Just wait until my gf gets here, you’ll definitely recognize her” (she is very attractive). He chuckled and put his hand on my arm, “You’re the one I’d recognize wink”.
I cracked up. Sometimes I’m unbelievably naive,
No mention of The Mummies? I saw them play a club in Pittsburgh and the music was great, but so was the entire concept of having no idea who was who.
Saw them at Auburn University, October 1969. It was the “Get Yer Ya Ya’s Out” tour. Chuck Berry opened. Unbelievable show! It was the first time I heard “Midnight Rambler.” I don’t think “Let it Bleed” had been released yet. At least, I hadn’t bought it.
I saw Jason and the Scorchers open for Webb Wilder in October 1989 at a club in Chicago. I had turned a friend on to Webb Wilder, and he turned me on to Jason. It was a GREAT show!!
I think the best part of the joke was that they were a damn good band.
I thought of another one- I saw Dave Alvin (solo, not with the Blasters) open for Roger McGuinn at the Vic in Chicago, 1991. I know McGuinn has been mentioned but I don’t think Dave Alvin has. He played a great set.
Edit: Looks like the Blasters were mentioned, by Elmer J Fudd
I saw Dave Alvin on my birthday once, at the Whisky. Blackjack David tour. He was amazing. I’m too young to have seen The Blasters, sadly.
Here’s a rare one: Nina Hagen. I saw her twice in L.A. during that odd period when she had converted to Hinduism (maybe? she cut a record of chants in Hindi around this time) and she held a few benefit concerts to raise money for a school in India. Stacy Q performed at one of those, doing an acoustic version of “Two of Hearts.”
Did anyone see Les Paul during his residency at Fat Tuesdays? The night my brother and I attended, Robert Plant and Brian Setzer were seated a couple of tables away. Les introduced “Bobby Plant” to the crowd and mentioned that “your friend Jimmy Page” had been by recently, which got a chuckle from the audience.
I got to see Prince in 1997. It was The Jam Of The Year World Tour at Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix. My ticket shows him billed as The Artist. The t-shirt I bought shows his symbol in purple and a bunch of words and phrases on the front. I still have it, only wore it a few times. People have them for sale for $150-$200. Once again, we were near the front of the stage under the covered seating area. When he played the piano we were right up there near him.
Yes, it was Steel Wheels. We saw the full shows both nights. My boyfriend had to pass on the right shoulder a number of times driving from SA to Dallas to get us there on time. He did it very safely though. When we got to the stadium, Living Colour started not long after. Perfect timing.
Saw Phil and Dave at one of Fitzgeralds’ 4th of July celebrations.
1969, at the Baltimore Civic Center. I think a couple of songs from that show ended up on Get Your Ya Yas Out.
I didn’t see that lineup, then.
Rod Stewart and Faces, just as Maggie Mae was hitting the airways!
