Something like a townhouse might be a good option - you could have your own (small) fenced yard for days when you just need to let the dogs out for a few to attend to their biological needs, though you’d still need to take them on one or two real walks each day.
Associations vary in how much exterior maintenance they do. For a true apartment-style condo, typically they handle everything exterior including gardening. For a townhouse, you’re more likely to have to maintain the exterior, so that’s a consideration. In exchange, of course, your monthly dues might be a lot less.
I don’t know your age, but a 55+ type of community might be an option. I don’t love them, but at least in Florida they’re a lot cheaper than non-restricted communities. Yeah, we actually own one (for my husband’s parents to live in).
Many of those have strict restrictions on pets - their former place allowed them, their current allows no pets at all, not even indoor cats (though we saw one sitting in a neighbor’s window as we were moving them in).
You’ll certainly be responsible for interior repairs - fridge dies, you fix it. When damage happens that has an external cause (say, the bathtub upstairs overflowed) it can get tricky.
