Condolences from a Democrat Doper

I don’t appreciate hagiographies either (had to read enough of them for my dissertation, thank you), especially about people I consider no saint, but neither can I accept comments like “Where’s my dancin’ shoes?” or “Where is the grave gonna be? Cause I’ve got a REALLY full bladder right now, see…” from this thread.

I mean, this is the sort of crap you see on those OTHER message boards. The ones we are always telling ourselves we’re better than. The ones I told myself we were better than. Yeah, those last two sentences belong in another thread, perhaps, but…I miss the days when not every thing had to be subsumed by political attack.

I’m sorry to gush so much. But I had to say thank you one more time madmonk28. I promise when the time comes I will remember. For that matter, I will remember this thread from now until then. Thanks.
<OK, I promise I’ll let the thread die this time.>

I greatly admired Ronald Reagan. He was the most libertarian president of modern times. And I greatly appreciate your condolences, Madmonk. Like others, I had been shocked at some of the incredibly sick posts in the Pit and elsewhere. You are a reminder to me that some Democrats are indeed liberal. Thank you.

Dude, we’ve been here the same amount of time. I don’t remember a time when a thread wouldn’t become political. I think the state of the world at the moment is politicising everything, and it is being reflected in the threads on the boards. Art imitating life, non?

“I disagreed with his policies” — political

“I’m glad the son of a bitch died.” — barbaric

Does it depend on who the son a bitch was? for example, lets pick someone I know you hate. what would your reaction be if you were alive when Andrew Jackson died and had knowledge of the Trail opf Tears, what would reaction be?

Yeah, but I don’t remember the vitriol. Not even during the 2000 election. Maybe I’m misremembering it, but I’ve never felt it so strongly. From posters I agree with, as well as disagree with.

Again, this isn’t about politics. This is about people not waiting until the body is cold before going off the deep end. I disliked Reagan too, but I respect my enemies because it is the only way that I can hope for my enemies to respect me. And that’s the only way you can actually change minds, as opposed to flinging insults on a message board.

Maybe it’s time for me to get out of here. The only emotions I ever get from reading this board any more are anger and sadness. I used to laugh and feel enlightened here, or feel like I’d learned a new point of view on a debate. I just don’t feel that way any more. Maybe this board hasn’t changed, and it’s me–perhaps it’s like the quote from Oscar Wilde: “I don’t recognize you–I’ve changed.” Whatever happened, this place doesn’t feel like home now.

I can only hope I gave more back to this board as it gave to me. I’ve just got other places to go now.

In a thread like this, I would refrain from posting. I hate him, but I do not hate the Dopers who do not hate him.

How is me saying “I hate Ronald Reagan” anywhere close to saying “I hate the people who like Ronald Reagan”?

It isn’t anywhere close. What it is is really, really inconsiderate. Jerkish, even.

No, but saying “I hate the people who like Ronald Reagan”, is the same as saying “I hate Ronald Reagan”. The two can be easily flipped in someone elses mind.

Anyway, I`d like to show my appreciation to the OP and the others in this thread who have expressed the same sentiment. And to those who have thanked the OP for his(?) thoughtfullness and class.

The anti-Reagan crowd and the crass clowns that infest every thread at every opportunity with their hatred of anything conservative is getting old. The pile-ons, as you may call them.
I`m glad some of you here feel the same way.

Despite your political leanings, Reagan was a very important part of the last century. He built the mold that many conservatives strive to duplicate.
The least we can all do is respect that.

I’m fairly liberal nowadays, but I too express my condolences and admiration of a great man (who I voted for twice). I don’t agree with everything his administration (or he himself) did (nor do I agree with everything Clinton did), but he was a patriot who dedicated much of his life to public service.

I know when Senator Wellstone died, we Minnesota Liberals were grateful for the compassion shown to us and the respect shown to Wellstone - another great patriot. We should all learn about what happened from THAT turning political.
