Confederate base names going away

Not to mention a very useful code book that belonged to the captain and a map of Charleston harbor.

During the Civil War free African-Americans in Pittsburgh built Fort Robert Smalls and in WW2 there was a Camp Robert Smalls so there is precedent for naming a Fort after him, I guess.

What’s wrong with naming a ship after a battle? The ship should not have been renamed, but sure, why not name a new ship for him.

Considered an important Confederate victory, and figures prominently in the overall mythos (includes death of Stonewall Jackson).

Indeed. It’s often considered Robert E. Lee’s greatest victory.

The battle in question is a renowned Confederate victory and it was named so to honor Confederate generals.

Bumped.

It’s not going to be easy to keep finding worthy US military figures with the same last names as Confederate generals.

Although I’m proud of our man from Maine, this renaming is just another petty insult to the majority of folks who know that our POS President and his SecDef really mean the original confederate. Wink, wink, nod, nod.

OTOH the actual Confederates would likely have wanted to forget about ol’ Braxton.

If the name has to be that of a traitor, I suggest Fort Trump.

How long before they find obscure GIs named Jefferson Davis and Robert E Lee to name forts after?

Hate Abides.

I was under the impression that Braxton Bragg had rendered such invaluable service to the Union through his incompetence that it named the fort in gratitude

Might I quietly suggest Fort Thompson, after Hugh Thompson, who intervened at the My Lai massacre?
Hugh Thompson Jr. - Wikipedia.

This is all wasteful spending, on new signage, stationary, etc.

I skimmed through the first line and thought it said that Hugh Thompson invented the My Tai.

As opposed to non-stationary signage?

That would be the Mai Tai, but if you want a Fort Trader Vic, it’s fine with me

Before or after they find one named Hitler?

I wouldn’t be surprised if this idea was thought up by Elon Musk’s nose picking child. But this was a decision made by an alleged adult man, Secretary of Defense no less, acting like a petulant child.

I’d still go for Fort Courage.
