Congratulations Larry King! You win the insensitive ass award!

LOL, BOOMshakalaka

Yeah, I’m no great fan of King but it’s a little unfair ripping him a new one for using the term making love to mean having sexual intercourse. That is it’s primary meaning in English. for God’s sake. You’re not implying by saying it that there was any love involved, you’re not even implying that it wasn’t rape. You’re just saying that ‘he screwed you’ in politer terms.

I disagree.

While the term “making love” doesn’t necessarily mean that there is love involved, often, there is. In contrast, the term “sexual intercourse” seems entirely clinical and is one step above “copulate”, in my book.

In any event, I don’t think it is a stretch to say that the term “making love” is generally perceived as a positive term and thus entirely incongruent with the act of rape.

A couple of years ago, I heard an interview of Larry King on NPR during which he boasted about his “no research” strategy. He told a story about moving his show to Tokyo for a week. One person he interviewed was a woman who was a Japanese television star whose career had almost ended as a result of her divorce – divorce is still a sensitive social subject in Japan and is not publicly discussed. King talked about how he flirted with her and then asked her something along the lines of – “You’re an attractive girl, how come you’re not married?” The woman was speechless, absolutely mortified and humiliated. King expressed pride at his absolute cluelessness.

Moron. Complete moron.

If this is your standard of what constitutes good journalism, that says a lot more about you than it does about Larry King. King is an idiot peddling igorance. This kind of journalism is one that preserves ignorance rather than fights it.

“Fucking” also means sexual intercourse, for God’s sake. Would it be unfair to rip him a new for refering to rape with this term in the middle of a interview?

It would be fair. Rape is the correct word. If more syllables are required, or if more legal leeway is needed, toss in alleged, or replace the word with sexually assaulted. We need these words to distinguish between sex as violent or coercive and sex as consensual.

I expect the people in media to have a proper command of the English language, and of any other language in which they operate. I’m not even talking about the politically correct parsing that goes on, but rather just using the words properly based on their proper technical meaning.

I disagree, but even so, if there’s a more exact and less ambiguous word, why wouldn’t he use it? After all, he was there not to discuss the woman’s sex life in general, but her rape.

I agree that Larry King is lousy. However, he didn’t force the student to give an interview. He probably paid him to do so. If you don’t want to be asked stupid and insensitive questions by media reps then don’t agree to do interviews with media reps, even for money.

While I agree that those who do interviews should be aware that they could be asked sensitive questions, these students and families may not be thinking completely rationally at this time.

I’m glad that somebody else noticed the “Does she have survivor guilt?” question. It’s stupid and offensive on so many levels.

-She’s still in the hospital undergoing surgery
-The brother already noted that he was in Boston, not there with her
-How should he know exactly what his sister feels
-She’s probably still in shock; it will take awhile to process her feelings
-Even bringing up the idea somehow implied that she should feel guilty for surviving

I wanted to ask him “Do you feel guilty for surviving all your heart problems when more worthwhile interviewers have died?”

Larry King just now, without an ounce of tact, to a shooting survivor:

“I don’t imagine you’ve ever seen anyone die before”

That doddering old freak should have been culled from the air years ago. Partly for his love of fortune tellers or “psychics” or whatever they’re called, and partly for his sheer cluelessness, something he seems to be actually proud of.
What a waste of oxygen
