Larry King retires from Larry King Live

Honestly, he’s been making a lot of mistakes and seems distracted over the past few years. I remember when he interviewed Stephen Curtis Chapman’s family about the daughter who was killed in a car accident and he kept getting their daughter’s name wrong. A lot.

Anyway, maybe it’s time for him to quit.

You can read his statement here.

Thoughts?

By the way, other than a 5 minute shift, didn’t Johnny Carson host the same show with the same time slot for 29 years?

Isn’t that longer?

He is far from my favorite TV personality, but I feel I must respect his contributions to the industry. Things might not be totally different without him, but yet they also wouldn’t be the same. He has worked hard, and I believe that deep down he is a fundamentally good man. May the rest of his last season go well, and may he especially enjoy all those little league games.

My family got cable TV late in life, and I’ve never ever seen an LK interview, ever. I usually only see him when his show is mentioned on other shows or parodied.

He was a senescent buffoon in the 1980s – it’s about bloody time.

I’ve enjoyed his many interviews over the years. SO many, from every blathering starlets to heads of corporations to politicos to humanitarians. It just won’t be the same any more without Larry King. I don’t know if there will be a replacement for him, or even an interview show at 9 p.m. on CNN in the future. (myself, I like the idea of rotating hosts. Ryan Seacrest, Katie Couric, whoever can interview intelligently.)

But yeah - time to go, Larry. Not only does he have some issues in his personal life that need attention, he is not in the best physical shape, and his mind seems indeed to be wandering. The last show I saw, he was interviewing Lady GaGa. I don’t know which was worse, interviewer or interviewee - they were both rambling and distracted, and I thought, why even bother?

To the Dalai Lama: “As a Muslim, what do you think of Jesus Christ?”

The man is a moron. One of the worst ever on television. How he lasted this long is a testament to the stupidity of his viewers.

Don’t let the doorknob hit you in the ass, Larry.

No way. Please tell me he did not really ask that.

Yes. My personal “He should have been put out to pasture ages ago” moment occurred… well, ages ago. 2002, or thereabouts, when he asked the victim of a horrifically violent rape “What was going through your mind as he was making love to you?”

They could have stuck some random dementia patient up there and had the same quality of interviews. It’s incomprehensible that his career lasted so song.

This is the closes I can find to it.

Is this a holy year in Muslim faith?

Larry King is famous for not preparing for his interviews. He says this is so he can ask the type of questions that normal people might ask. I think he’s just too damn lazy to do his job well.

All I can figure is that he has good connections. He certainly didn’t succeed because of talent.

This.

I’ve never understood his staying power. He is indeed a moron of epic proportions, and he’s a very poor interviewer.

Learning today that he has been on CNN for 25 years shocked me. This fact alone indicates one of only two possibilities: He has pictures of Ted Turner feltching a goat  or the conspiracy theorists are right and the Jews DO own and control the media.* :dubious:

The guy’s skull is shaped like the head of a praying mantis. I can’t even ***look ***at him without thinking about buying a can of Raid. Compound that with his lack of preparation, and you have one of the greatest mysteries of longevity in TV history.

It would be nice (if CNN is going to keep the timeslot in an interview format) to see them put someone like Charlie Rose there.

***** FTR, this was meant to be a joke, so hold your anti-dentite comments.

I wonder if he is also leaving his other gig, as host of “Tales From The Crypt”?

Considering he died in 1988 and what’s been on TV all this time is his only slightly revivified remains he’s had a good run. I wonder if this has anything to do with his recent announcement of a 24th divorce followed by reconciliation; if so I would think the last thing that would save a Larry King marriage is more togetherness time.

From a previous thread:

Yep.

If he’s retiring in 2010, he’s on my Death Pool list for 2011. I figure the only way he’s voluntarily retiring is because he got a very bad medical diagnosis.

I will endeavor to assure the he doesn’t die a pointless death.

Is it wrong that the first thing that popped in my head was no more Larry King Game on the Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show?

(I’m not going to link to the actual game, since it would be a bit gauche. But I can’t go mentioning the show without at least linking to the archives. It’s only spreading by word of mouth, so I’ve got to do my part. It’s got some nice long interviews, even if the host is a bit rambling in the intros.)

What is the Larry King Game on Kevin Pollak’s show?
