If I may offer an opinion -
This reminds me of the Sarah Palin argument from all those years ago when no one had heard of her. Please remember that I have always been a supporter of John McCain and can remember when he was first running office in AZ.
Beyond any shadow of a doubt Palin was FAR, FAR too uninformed to be the Vice President of the United States. Her lack of qualifications is stunning in retrospect. But that does not mean she deserved the descriptor I most often heard applied to her- she was not an idiot. For a suburban housewife she shes competent enough. She could grocery shop and make kids lunches, hold down a job and probably change a flat tire. Palin could keep a calendar and showed up for appointments on time despite her complete lack of understanding around matters of policy foreign and domestic.
In a like manner, MTG and Boebert seem likely to be bright enough to exist as a low information citizen showing up shouting slogans they read on bumper stickers (perhaps because even those simple thoughts are beyond their ability to arrive at independently). The problem is that they have been elected to be the leaders of those kind of people.
If we look at it from the other end-- they are members of congress who have access to proprietary and occasionally secret information (at least when they serve on committees). That is why there are rules against using that information for personal gain. But even being in that rarefied atmosphere and gaining all that inside information – they still spout the stupid, illogical “ideas” they do. Rather than learning and seeking to guide their constituents to better lives thru better policies, they use their power and influence to consolidate that power and keep the crowd with their torches and pitchforks on their side.
To take this further, it is the logical conclusion of those who vote for who they would rather have a beer with than the smartest or most competent candidate. I personally don’t want a candidate “just like me”. I would rather have the smartest, hardest working wonk making the sausage or leading the department. Those people who loved Trump specifically because “he is not a politician” are particularly misguided in my opinion. He is not a surgeon either, but I don’t want him cutting into my body (I very certainly do not want him passing the gas before my surgery!). He is not a pilot which is a major reason I don’t want him flying the plane!! But somehow the fact that he has zero experience as a politician is supposed to be a good thing. History has proven that NOT to be the case!
The idea that Boebert and Greene are just like us is exactly why they are unqualified for the jobs they hold. They are better qualified to be the ones in the back of the school board meetings shouting about things they do not understand until someone who DOES know what the hell they are talking about stands up and explains reality so those who really care about what is best for the students can override the uninformed who only care about an abstract idea they can’t really grasp completely.
I am not a huge fan of AOC, but I admire her for being well informed (whenever I have heard her speak), for doing for others- even outside of her own district, and for truly understanding complex situations that have to balance the concerns of many points of view even if she can be surprised by unfamiliar appliances.(*) She is certainly smart enough to do her job and shows every sign of working diligently to perform the best she can in that role. It is also to her credit that she seems to consider more than one point of view as she does those things- that she tempers her views within a larger context than her own district. I am not sure the same could be said the other women mentioned above.
(*) I had never heard this story about the disposal but it reminds me of a section of the Richard Hooker book M-A-S-H Goes To Maine. Some backwoods, and possibly inbred family brings one of their young to the new hospital for a much needed surgery but spend most of the time while he is in the O.R. marveling at the flush toilet - - something they had never seen before. Quaint.
Yes exactly- that is what I mean. But only part of what I mean.
