Conservatives: Explain why Palin has "energized the base"

Polerius’s Rule of Thumb: Anyone using McCain-Palin vs Obama-Plagiarist is not arguing in good faith and does not deserve to be debated.

She is, on the other hand, a Vagina-American and thus will invigorate the votes of other Vagina-Americans.

Moderator’s Warning: Please leave the accusations of lying and/or trolling in the Pit and out of Great Debates.

First, I stated a fact: “Anyone using McCain-Palin vs Obama-Plagiarist is not arguing in good faith.”

Is it your opinion that someone who is comparing the McCain-Palin ticket vs the “Obama-Plagiarist” ticket in a GD thread is arguing in good faith?

Second, if “Anyone using McCain-Palin vs Obama-Plagiarist is not arguing in good faith” is accusation of trolling, why isn’t the following from Shodan also “accusation of trolling”?

Why did you not give a Mod warning to Shodan?

Because the truly stupid among Americans can only understand issues in three word chunks. “Energized the Base”. [Shiver]

As little as eight years ago, McCain had a spine, so they’re afraid that his gentle sucking on Bush’s glans is an act. They fear that the moment he’s sworn in he’ll bite down and spit ignorant cowboy cockhead in their faces. That once he’s in office he’ll revert back to the “Maverick” he used to be and start tearing down all the good work they’ve been able to accomplish under Dubyuh.

But hiring on a vapid breeding-pit like Palin is the circumcision-like covenant with the ignorant religious wing of the party. It shows that he is so utterly beholden to them that he’ll choose what they want over the safety and well-being of the nation. That he won’t think for himself once he’s in charge. He’ll keep on sucking long after Dubyuh graces him with the salty communion.

Moderator’s Warning: Shodan, please refrain from speculating in this manner on the motives of other posters in Great Debates.

Lemur866 had already made his offending post when Shodan posted the above; Shodan then turned around and posted this about Polerius, who then returned the favor by asserting that Shodan is not arguing in good faith. So, now that everyone has gotten that out of their systems, all of y’all please argue in good faith, and with the assumption that everyone else is also arguing in good faith–or take it to the Pit.

Fair enough. My apologies for the implication.

Regards,
Shodan

Not much to add, other than from everything I’m hearing in the news, she’s energized the the Evangelical Christian faction of the Republican party who, as I’ve also heard, have been luke-warm about McCain.

This has had me scratching my head because, with the exception of the current administration, John Nance Garner pretty much had it right when he said that the office of Vice President was, “not worth a bucket of warm piss.”

Another thing I don’t like is everything that’s coming out about her, like the firings, being for the “bridge to nowhere” until it was unpopular but yet now pretending that she was always against it, and a few other things.

But none of this will bother most of her supporters. My mother, for example, who heard a lot of criticism about Pailin said something like “They’re really out to get her, and I don’t like it.” The irony being, that my mom eats up criticism about Obama and Hillary.

I can explain it for you.

Republicans have been depressed for a long time - Since Reagan, really. They loved Reagan. He was a father figure, a spiritual leader, and he embodied everything they liked about their party and themselves. Honor, courage, standing up for American values, all that stuff.

Then Reagan left, and the Republican party started to drift. Bush I was an eastern moderate, and was never much of a Republican standard bearer. For a while, Newt and his ‘Contract with America’ pulled them together, but then he got booted out, the Republicans lost the House, and the Republican party started to fracture.

George W. Bush has been a huge disappointment to Republicans. Not just because of the war or because he’s let spending get out of control, but because he’s absolutely refused or been unable to defend Republican values. Bush is inarticulate and clumsy and oafish, and he’s been making the Republicans look bad. And the Republicans in the House and Senate have thumbed their noses at the principles in their own party other than paying lip service to the religious right. They’re big spending earmarkers without principles.

In the meantime, Democrats discovered a star in Obama. They emerged from their wilderness with purpose, a vision, and excitement. The Republicans had nothing. None of their candidates looked good this year. But worse than that, the farm team looked especially weak. There are no young stars waiting in the wings. Well, there was this Palin woman up in Alaska who looked good, but that seemed like a longshot.

Republicans have been telling themselves not only that they were going to lose the election, but that they deserved to lose. Their representatives from Bush down screwed up, and they knew it. There was no one to replace them. The party was completely fractured along neo-con/theo-con lines.

What they wanted more than anything was another Reagan. Or their own Obama. Someone who would re-affirm Republican principles, and do it in style. Someone who could make them feel proud and give them their ‘Hell yeah!’ moments.

Enter Sarah Palin. She comes in out of the blue, an attractive woman with real accomplishment, and knocks 'em dead. She gives a barn-burner of a speech, and during it she emphasizes all the old Republican ideas that they used to hear from Reagan. Government’s not the solution - it’s the problem. America’s a great place. Taxes are too high, government’s too big, eastern elites are pushing everyone around too much. And she did it with real Reaganesque flair. She was so good that even the liberals were going, “Damn.”

They’ve found their Reagan again. That’s what it comes down to. And because she’s young, the Republicans are now feeling as though their party might actually have a future. It’s okay that she won’t be president - McCain may only serve one term, but even if he does two, they know that Palin will be the nominee the next time around.

Of course, it could all come crashing down. Palin could turn out to be Dan Quayle II. I highly doubt it, though. But if she doesn’t, then even if McCain loses they’ll be happy, because Sarah will be there ready to take on the Democrats in the next election.

It may not all be totally rational, and Palin may not deserve that level of accolade, but she’s gotten it because she’s pushed all the right buttons, and she’s done it while becoming a star of Obama proportions.

And it’s not just Republicans. McCain has opened a 15% lead among independents because of her. That’s astounding. That kind of move from independents hasn’t been seen for a decade or more.

That’s why the base is energized.
