Brain, I’m too tired to reply to all of the above so I’ll limit myself to this last point. First of all I’m a libertarian, not a Libertarian. Haven’t been one of those since late 2001 for obvious reasons.
Yes, yes I’m absolutely terrified of living under the Patriot Act for another four years. The fear is seared, seared in my memory. Here’s my nightmare. I’m engaged in some terrorist activity with one of my buddies and we do our plotting via cell phone. Every few weeks I get a new cell phone because I know that a court ordered wiretap only applies to one phone line, not to a person. So I know I’m safe. Then the unthinkable happens. I’ve forgotten all about the Patriot Act and that the feds are now able to wiretap the new phone immediately based on the original court order. I continue my plotting, get nabbed, and go to a federal prison where I’ll have a better standard of living and more civil rights than 99% of the people living in tyrannies today. Man, have I lost sleep over that one.
If you are interested in more articulate explanations of why a libertarian should support the WOT I’d suggest reading Neil Boortz or Thomas Sowell.
BTW, how have you and your friends had to change your lifestyle because of the Patriot Act?
