Conspiracy About Women’s Clothing And Pockets

Not that many people wear watches. Far fewer use pocket watches. I have a feeling that eccentrics who do don’t often wear shorts.

A buddy of mine is a police officer. He claimed that (1) the little jeans pocket is mainly used for hiding dope (when this was illegal in Canada) and that (2) this was the only use people had for very, very tiny sealable plastic storage bags.

What’s the deal with the men’s pajama front pocket? Although I can’t say I often wear these, this confused me. Is it to store stuff while I sleep? What? Pens so one can impale oneself? Tiny phones? Airline peanut packets? Is it to make pajamas look more like a blazer? Does this somehow fool women or deeply impress them? Is it to safely store contraception? “Don’t worry. I brought an IUD, which I can insert…”

It’s for their hankerchief or Kleenex though I doubt it has ever been used that way, at least not by a guy.

I’m confused. Did he think that was why that pocket existed? And did he also think there was no other use for very, very tiny sealable plastic storage bags?

Exactly that. Or so he claimed, but he wasn’t talking about the origin of it last century. I can’t say I ever use the little jeans pocket - maybe I have for subway tokens? I don’t know where you can even buy super tiny plastic bags.

I’m sure they’re available from Amazon. They’re very commonly used for small parts in products requiring assembly, or extra parts for many products. They’re often used as packaging for any small items sold individually.

Not my theory. I am sure they have many uses.

@Dr_Paprika

I’ve bought the little ziplocs at WallyWorld. And of course you can buy any size imaginable at Amazon.

Mr VOW gets migraines. I use the little bags to hold an Imitrex, two Aleve and two Carbidopa/Levodopa pills. I keep a couple in my purse, and I make sure he’s got at least one packet with him whenever he leaves the house.

Years ago, I used to make bread mixes for use in a bread machine. I used the teeny ziplocs to hold the yeast for one loaf and I’d package it with the mix. The mixes made wonderful holiday gifts!

My husband keeps a handkerchief in his pajama pocket. It’s pretty gross but laundry day, too Some of my PJs have a chest pocket, and i use it to hold my phone when I’ve taken my phone into the bathroom, but now i need to grab some toilet paper.

I use the “watch pocket” for coins and a tiny swiss army knife. I’ve always called it a “coin pocket”, although i think i knew that historically it was for a pocket watch.

I have no use for tiny plastic bags, but my friends who are into board games but them in lots of sizes, from eenzie-weensie through small, and use them to keep game pieces organized in the box. I’ve night kits that had a couple of screws in a tiny plastic bag.

okay folks–I am not quite as smart as the great Cecil.
But I do know two things, about which I shall now enlighten you all:

  1. Number one, about that tiny, flat pocket-in-a-pocket :

Ask anybody who plays guitar…that is your PICKPOCKET.

2. Number two, about the pajama pocket:

That’s where you put your reading glasses on Sunday mornings, during those brief moments when you take a break from working the crossword puzzle.in the New York Times.

I’ll bite. Whats a “night kit?” I’m guessing it’s related to the game playing you mention just before?

Ah, I had forgotten about reading glasses.

“Marge, has anyone recently deposited a million dollars in our chequing account?” (Puts on serious moon shaped glasses.)

Because Adam Smith’s invisible hand is actually really clumsy, slow, and inefficient. Sure, eventually someone will decide to actually meet the unmet need, and once they do (and get past all of the many hurdles to any new business), they’ll be very successful, but it can take a long time before anyone takes that first step.

I use swype, and sometimes end up with weird swypos. Sorry.

Ah, and I was hoping to learn something new!

Because I guess my thing now is taking pictures of pockets, here is a view of the inner pocket on my shorts. This is what I was talking about, and maybe @Paintcharge, too. In the background I have some jeans with the typical fifth pocket that I’ve always known as a watch pocket or coin pocket. You should be able to see the pocket on the shorts is different.

It’s hard to take a clear shot of a white pocket, deep inside another white pocket. I’ve put a knife in there to make it easier to see. I’m not good enough to show proper depth, so keep in mind that the little pocket is deep inside the big pocket, not at all like the fifth pocket on the jeans that sticks out the top of the big pocket.

I’m not sure what it’s for, other than being a pocket that is perfectly useful for holding a utility knife or any other small item.

The original intent for the inner right front pocket of men’s pants was that your flip-phone went in there. It kept it close enough to the top that it was easy to reach, and because the inner pocket is on the skin-side of the outer pocket, it produces a less obvious line or bulge where the phone sits.

They worked great. Then phones got bigger and pockets didn’t. Now they’re mostly something to catch on something else. If you carry a car keyfob that’s not attached to another dozen keys and a big ring, it can ride in there very neatly. Although if those get much bigger we’ll have the same problem.

If this is true than this innovation appeared circa 1995?

Yeah, I think there’s a substantial demand, but it’s not every woman, and maybe not even enough women to support a company for which that would be the only draw.

Eshakti, however, seems to be doing pretty well with a bunch of dresses that have a flared-out skirt to which it’s natural to append (deep, awesome) pockets. (To be fair, that’s not its only draw – it also does a lot of customization.) For the last at least ten years I’ve never bought a dress that’s not from Eshakti. I actually tried this year to buy a dress in person as I’m going to a wedding and need a new dress and thought it might be easier to buy one in person, but the lack of pockets and the limited selections just defeated me, and I went back to Eshakti.

Eshakti is good for pockets, and I had forgotten about them! I should have another look. I’ll also mention that I have a few inexpensive dresses from Old Navy that have wonderful pockets.

Well, and they can just buy men’s jeans instead. I found out about the travesty of women’s pockets when I put on a pair of my wife’s jeans as a lark to see if they would fit me. They fit me just fine, but then I tried to put my hands in the pockets. Nope. couldn’t even get past the middle of my fingers. So, if she wanted pockets, she could just put on a pair of mine.
