Contact lenses on coma patients?

A thought came to mind while reading the contact lens on a corpse thread. If the person is dead, really no biggie for them if contact lenses are left in the eyes. But what about someone who is hospitalized due to a coma or other debilitation where the patient is unable to get them removed from their eyes or communicate that the have them in?

Do hospital staff look for them? It appears eye damage is very possible if they are left in too long and more so if the eyes are shut. What is routinely done for that occurring?

My WAG, but if a patient is brought in to the ER unconscious, the medical professionals will look at the patient’s eyes, to check for dilation reflex, and would most likely notice that contact lenses were in place. Eventually the lenses would be removed, to avoid eye infections.

If you’re discovered unconscious responders will check for airway, breathing, and circulation. One of the many things they’re going to do after that is peel back an eyelid and shine a light in there to check for pupil response. They’ll see a contact lens, guaranteed.

…and contacts are very easy to remove from an unconscious person. The lens holding kits that hospitals carry come with a little suction cup device to aid removal, but it is not necessary.
