Someone has already made a post to the effect that it can’t be proven that psychics are using cold-reading techniques without a direct admission. What can be proven is that what psychics do looks just like cold-reading techniques.
Sorry. My mind went blank earlier…
Bigelow. I think his first name is Bob. He’s got the bucks, if someone here can motivate him to fund the research.
More on Bigelow…

Subject: UpDate: The MUFON-NIDS Coalition
Greetings,
By now, you should have all seen the Non-Comprehensive Report On The MUFON July 2000 Symposium held recently on July 14 to 16th at the West Port Plaza Sheraton Chalet in Maryland Heights in St. Louis County, Missouri (USA) by Bob Soetebier at:
http://www.ufomind.com/ufo/updates/2000/aug/m05-004.shtml
So am I the only one hearing alarm bells going off?!
Please take a close look at the following statements:
<begin quote>
After Missouri MUFON State Director Bruce Widaman’s short
welcome-to-the-symposium intro, out-going MUFON International
Director Walter H. Andrus, Jr., gave a brief address in which
noted his pending “semi-retirement” due to his need to attend to
his wife Jean’s failing health. Andrus praised his wife’s
long-standing help in his UFO-related efforts. He then turned
the podium over to John F. Schuessler, M.S., who was to assume
the MUFON International Directorship on the Sunday afternoon of
the symposium.
After more praise for Andrus, Schuessler moved on to publicly
laud Las Vegas-based billionaire real estate magnate Robert T.
Bigelow’s, National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS).
Schuessler said he hoped to promote “sharing” info/efforts with
NIDS and the possibility of some sort of UFOlogical coalition
with NIDS and other UFO organizations. (From a few comments I
heard from other MUFONites, apparently not all share
Schuessler’s enthusiasm for NIDS.)
He went on to note that in the next year or two MUFON hopes to
have its entire case database on-line via its web
site.(Apparently only general case synopses will be available
on-line for access by the general public; specific case details
will be accessible only to registered MUFON members.)
Washington State MUFON Director Gerald E. Rolwes:
is also a strong NIDS proponent according to the “scuttlebutt”
heard at the symposium

A New Day for UFO Research

The Air Force did it, albeit reluctantly, for about two decades. A few private UFO organizations tried it, too – and promptly lost their shirts.
Bigelow Thinks Big, Plans Lunar Cruise Ship
Now the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) is doing it – fielding a rapid response team to investigate promising UFO reports. The question is: will they succeed where others have failed?
NIDS was founded in 1995 by Las Vegas real-estate tycoon Robert Bigelow to investigate UFO sightings, animal mutilations and other anomalous phenomena.
Through its first four years of operation, during which Bigelow hired a staff of scientists to run the institute, NIDS was largely silent about its work and cagey in its public statements.
Few people were even aware of its existence and those who were, primarily UFOlogists, regarded the fledging institute in the desert with suspicion.
All that has now changed.
P.S. I can’t get to the NIDS site now. I think I heard that Bob had pulled the plug on it. Their researchers were getting into some extremely strange areas. Some of the reports were very difficult to believe. I don’t know if Bob got scared by some of the things they ran into, or if the government told him to shut it down. I’ve never heard the reason. Of course it’s possible he just ran out of money…

I have no idea what you are talking about here, I think you missed the point entirely.
Since you can’t prove psychics are using the theoretical method of cold reading, can you show cites proving there is such a thing as cold readings in a controlled study.

Leroy
Thank you. My apologies. Your link works just fine.

You are completely missing the point. In fact, you have it exactly backwards.
We know cold reading exists. We know it works. We do not know that psychic powers (or abilities or skills or whatever the hell you want to call them) exist. You, however, are claiming they do.
It is up to you to prove this. What we can say is that what psychics do looks remarkably like cold reading in many (most) cases. And since we know cold reading exists, it is logical to conclude that what they are doing is, in fact, cold reading. Now, if you want to claim otherwise, it is up to you to provide the evidence as you are making the claim.
So let’s see it. I mean, you’ve only had 17 pages to come up with it and so far all you’ve managed to do is say things and then claim you never said them and ignore whatever anybody else presents to you.
Okay, as I said earlier, Penn and Teller had a person on their show who went through the “psychic” routine. He later admitted he wasn’t a psychic. Now, that’s not a controlled study, but do you think he really was a psychic, only lieing about it, or do you think he was just doing a cold reading?

D’oh, double post.
BTW-Anyone else notice how long this thread has become?
Unless there is some compelling reason, this is my last post in this thread, It has gone long enough for me.
There is within you a light, a spark of love from the full flame of the Creator. We come into the physical in order to grow that spark into its full potential. We are that spark, not the bodies we wear.
There are many ways to contact your spiritual nature, that inner spark of love. Some know it from birth, others use meditation, affirmation, prayer, and/or other techniques. Still others discover it suddenly in near death, visions, or out-of-body experiences. It can also be found through the teachings of the great masters of the world religions such as Jesus.
Now, it doesn’t matter how you discover your spirituality, but it does matter that you do so at some point in your lifetime. Those who discover it become spiritualists. They are Psychics, Healers, Teachers, and Metaphysicians. They follow the traditions of the masters in healing the sick, bringing hope, comfort to the dying and those who grieve for them, teaching the principles of spirit, and generally helping their fellow man. They do their tasks very well.
Some examples: Danion Brinkley, near death experiencer, formed “Compassion In Action.” An organization that puts volunteers into Hospices. These volunteers are there to be with the dying person, holding their hand. CIA’s slogan, “No one need die alone.”
Betty Edie, near death experiencer, lectures, seminars of learning to love.
James Van Praagh, John Edward, and George Anderson, are devoted to helping people through the grieving process by contacting their loved ones in the spirit world. Recently on the “Beyond” show, James talked a lady out of taking her own life. They perform a service that no one else can, a vital service.
Other spiritualists also lecture, build websites, hold seminars and do good works for others.
We believe in compassion, non-judgemental attitudes, and forgiveness. You won’t see one with problems of anxiety, depression, or other emotional distress, for they teach others how to overcome these things with spiritual methods.
I have witnessed on this board a lot of anger and hate directed at Psychics. I can’t keep anyone from bashing them, but I can inform them of what psychics do. My task is not to change the world, just teach it ideas that will be of value.
Psychics that are full time get paid for what they do, most of us work for nothing, or very little. I have not collected one penny from my site, and don’t care to, the money is not important, helping others, that’s what’s important. My site has helped others, check the “letters I receive” section, and when I receive an email like the link below, it makes it all worth while.

Gosh what a shame. And you ended it with so much of the evidence that we’ve been asking for, too.
Oh, wait, scratch that. I meant you ended it with the same crap you’ve been providing for over 17 pages.
You mean we won’t make 1000 posts?
I’ve posted on the nde web site. There he said that JVP et al have proven themselves. I asked him what that entails. My post is the last one in the thread.
Big shock there. Actually, the big shock is that they have allowed your post to stand at all. Many True Believer sites I’ve encountered over the years shoot skeptics on sight. (With a “skeptic” being anybody who dares to ask questions like, “Where is the evidence.”)
Hey, Leroy?
WTF does this mean:
“Psychics that are full time get paid for what they do, most of us work for nothing, or very little.”
So, now are you a psychic, after telling us you weren’t?
Which version of truth are you working from today?
…Cite?

I think there’s been “hate and anger” directed at people that portray themselves as psychics. there’s the difference.
This is what we have been dealing with, folks. Does this help explain the train-wreck of a thread we have here? Somehow the logic seems topsy-turvy. Evolution is stagnant and NDEs provide scientific proof, although I’m not sure of what. Geez, Louise.
