Contest by newsletter from iOS app (legal?)

I am planning of having a free app in the iTunes store. In order to promote it, I was thinking of having a contest. Every person who would join my newsletter from within the app he/ she would be able to take part in the contest (sweepstake).

  1. is it legal? There is a prize, and chance to win, but no purchase is necessary (the app is free). If it is, then how about adding the possibility to subscribe to newsletter from my website as well?
  2. is it against Apple rules?

Have you checked Apple’s T&C for developers, AppStore and iOS apps? I ask because that’s the first place I would look.

Sweepstakes and contests …

They are two different words / meanings but unfortunately, people use them as if they were the same.

In the United States …

• A sweepstakes is a random drawing and it cannot require a fee to enter
• A contest is a game of skill and it can require a fee to enter
