Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread

I’m gonna bet a nickel you cannot substantiate this claim. Does “unwelcome” mean “unauthorized”? I have seen interviews with some of the parents attesting that they are residents of the required variety. Is there a policy that forbids anyone without a directly supplied permit from going to the pool? If you are watching your sister’s kids for the day, you can’t take them with your kids to the pool? Your girlfriend is visiting, you can’t take her there?

Don’t try to substitute insinuation for fact. If you got it, bring it, otherwise, here is your cuppa STFU.

I would say this is true in all jurisdictions, but compliance is circumstantial. If an officer asks me some questions, then arbitrarily orders me to do that for no good reason, my compliance is equally arbitrary: I can choose to do so or not do so and not expect to face and significant consequences. By contrast, if I have been stopped for speeding or driving erratically, not complying could easily lead to serious consequences.

What constitutes a lawful order is not always clear, and when the police act to escalate a situation, which is the opposite of their duty, the actual lawfulness of their orders becomes highly questionable.

I agree with you that arbitrary orders for no good reason aren’t lawful orders. In fact, they’re awful orders.

BobLibDem requested a list of what they can tell us to do and what they can’t. I complied with his wish, but only supplied one example. Here’s another one - Keep your hands where I can see them.

Show me the money! I’ve won internet bets before, including one on this website, and the welchers didn’t pay up. Show me the money!

“Craig Ranch’s strict homeowners’ association rules prohibit bringing more than two guests to the pool.” - from here: http://wreg.com/2015/06/09/teen-speaks-out-after-recording-viral-pool-party-video-2/

Here’s a link to the community newsletter that explains that an access card is required for entry to the pool (scroll down to page 4): http://www.craigranchliving.com/ResourceCenter/DocViewer/10389?doc_filename=CRT%2003%20April%202014%20Final%200314.pdf&find=pool&doc_id=1355869&print=1

Here is a link to a community document that says pool parties are limited to 20 people: https://secure.associationvoice.com/ResourceCenter/DocViewer/10389?doc_filename=Amenity%20Rental%20Usage%20Policy.pdf&find=pool&doc_id=59648&print=1

Also, for those who don’t know, this wasn’t actually even a planned pool party. The organizer was having a cook-out style party with a DJ in the adjacent area. The crowd got huge and a lot of them decided they wanted in the pool. Apparently the DJ had been tweeting out invites for a “pool party” even though that isn’t what it was supposed to be. So a bunch of kids show up thinking it’s an open pool party, which it was never intended to be, and tried to gain unauthorized access to the pool area.

BTW, my community pool has similar policies - electronically locked gate you need an access card to open, security guard you have to sign in with and list your address and he copies down your security card number, and a limited number of guests, etc.

We didn’t always have the security guard but had to get one because of the numerous and frequent problems with youths (of all colors) and tons of unauthorized people (of all colors). It is a much more enjoyable place now and is used by people of all colors - the people who pay for the pool and the small number of allowed guests they might bring.

Sooner or later there will be vids of people shooting officers in self-defence.

Curiously, the video we have of the altercation shows it taking place in the street, not in the pool area. Not sure what to make of that.

“Our policies, our training, our practice, do not support his actions,” McKinney Police Chief Greg Conley said Tuesday evening. “He came into the call out of control, and the video showed he was out of control.”

If that should come to pass, I’ll be betting on the police, and the supporters of the police, winning any Arab Spring-style insurrection. Big cities like Baltimore, Chicago, and NYC will have to wait for their Democrat party leadership to be un-elected. It’s safer if the anti-police types stick to harassing phone calls, and internet death threats.

The man’s own boss said he was out of control and behaved unacceptably. All this other stuff is really irrelevant to that fact.

And my former cop buddy just posted some bullshit 4-picture thing claiming to “prove” that the officer never drew his weapon. I countered with a screen shot of it drawn and pointed at the two guys running.

If you’ve seen the clip, two of the man’s fellow officers run up behind him and stop him.

Again, all this other shit about how it started, what was happening, etc is all irrelevant. The man made an epically stupid tactical blunder then compounded it by drawing down on two unarmed kids who were running away.

This is not a man who needs to be working in this position.

Thanks for the links.

(But I was really counting on taking elucidator’s money. )

Tough Guy’s boss obviously has a thing against cops.

*Tough Guy, aka Loudmouth- That works, too.

Not to mention Tough Guy’s treatment of Bikini Girl. What an epic douche-fuckin-bag.

Well I guess it’s only fair then that I owe you a nickel for messing up that bet.

In fact, I already went and got a cashier check that I’m happy to send you.

Just one little problem - I mistakenly had it made out for $5000.05 and you can just imagine how embarassed I am about that.

But I really need to make this right. So if you could just send me a check for the difference, I’ll drop mine in the mail to you, and we’ll be all squared up! : )

Judge in Freddie Gray case rejects Mosby’s motion for gag order.

The judge presiding over the prosecution of six Baltimore Police officers involved in the arrest of Freddie Gray struck the state’s motion for a gag order in the case.

Judge Charles J. Peters ruled the motion lacked standing in an actual proceeding, as it was filed by Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s office in Circuit Court on May 14. At that time, the officers’ cases were still in District Court. They weren’t transferred to Circuit Court until May 21, when the officers were indicted.

…“We’re not going to litigate this case in the media and discuss our trial strategy,” Ritchie said*.

It’s odd that Mosby’s office isn’t more aware of how important dates are when filing motions. Mosby was wrong about the legality of Freddie Gray’s knife, she was unaware that she had ordered the police to target drug sellers in the area Freddie Gray was working, and now this.

I guess Mosby rejects the notion that the defense should also be able to try their case in the court of public opinion. Only Mosby can try a case in the court of public opinion.

Could you include a few Liberia stamps? I need them to complete my Nigerian letter and Zimbabwe farm letter collection.

It’s pretty simple in most places:

The police can tell you do do absolutely anything they feel like. Anything.

And if you do not do what they tell you to do, then they are completely free to do anything they want to you. Up to and including assaulting or killing you.

And they will, for the most part, suffer no consequences for any of their actions. They merely have to say that you were resisting arrest, or you were out of control, that they were in fear for their lives because they thought you had a weapon.

Does not matter if you had no weapon, or if you stood still or even if you did everything you were told; they can simply do whatever they like to you.

Most police, thankfully, do not abuse this amazing power. Some, however, do.

I guess Tough Guy was still a bit under the weather from having dealt with two suicides, and their families, earlier in the day. What a wuss. :smack:

Think any of the other 11 officers on the scene who didn’t act like douchebags had dealt with any tough issues prior to this call? Or had they all just started their shifts?

Poor Officer Loudmouth. Post Traumatic Stress Douchebaggery.

It’s a good thing for you that you live in a country with a written, publicly available legal system then.

Well that was the epically stupid tactical mistake. Attack the least dangerous, most obviously not armed person and then sit on her, placing yourself at a lower and immobile position in the middle of a hostile crowd. STUPID.
Looks like my former cop gaming buddy just defriended me. He ‘shared’ this 4 picture thing claiming to prove that the cop never drew his weapon or pointed it at anyone. I called it an obvious lie and posted the screen-shot of the guy with his gun pointed at the two guys running.

Then I get the “Who are you? Are you a cop? Have you ever been in those situations?” bullshit. I show my bonafides (gun owner 42 years, NRA Benefactor member for about 20 of those, 5 years Security work, most of it armed, multiple martial arts belts and yes, I HAVE actually had a weapon in my hand in self defense more than twice.) And got immediately de-friended.

God, what a fucking ass. Doesn’t matter who the fuck I am, the pictures and videos prove that you’re posting A FUCKING LIE.
