Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread

Which girl? The earlier incident where the officer talked a girl out of suicide, or the later incident when some asshole wouldn’t leave after she was repeatedly told to do so?

Country singer Randy Howard shot to death in gunfight with bounty hunter. Obviously this guy isn’t a poster boy for innocent victim:

But the reason I’m tossing this in here is that the bounty hunter business is essentially the outsourcing of a law enforcement function to private citizens.

Lord knows I’m pretty critical of trigger-happy cops, but ISTM that the solution is manifestly NOT to outsource some of their work to a group of largely poorly-regulated private individuals. (In Tennessee, where this incident happened, bounty hunters must (a) have no felony convictions, and (b) take eight hours of training a year from the Tennessee Association of Bail Agents. That’s it, AFAICT.)

(FWIW, I’ve known for many years that this line of work exists, but just hadn’t had reason to think about it for awhile.)

Those aren’t documentaries? I guess there’s no point in trying to pass off the quotes of actors, or the scribbling of screen writers, as actual facts. That’s good to know.

Why should she have left? She was making no trouble – only those two white women were making any trouble – and it was her party.

And she’ll die if he wants her to.

Then he wouldn’t have talked her out of the suicide.

Because she was told to by a cop. You realise by “left”, we mean “crossed the road and waited while things were sorted out”, not " got out of the area for good", right?

(bolding mine)

You’re OK with law enforcement slamming a citizen’s entire body into the ground for THAT?!? Jesus. I’d hate to think of what you’re OK with for a real infraction, like a half-housebroken puppy piddling on the carpet.

I’m not sure that is the same group of folks.

Especially when the good cops are punished for pointing out the bad cops.

Missouri state trooper disciplined after blowing the whistle on in-custody drowning death.

You would cry too if it happened to you.

Didn’t the last spate of general gun-control hysteria happen when the Black Panthers started exercising their 2nd Amendment rights or something?

If one is serious about gun control, the lesson is obvious - get black people to get serious about gun freedom.

This was addressed earlier in this thread. It was not a good thing.

You seem to be missing the fact that apparently painting all cops with a broad brush stained by the actions of a few is acceptable, while similarly doing that with any minority group would quickly get you labeled a racist.

Actions of a few?? My cop friend (who is an honest, good cop) will likely retire early. He is very unhappy in a job where the majority of his coworkers are bad. He includes cops willing to “look the other way” as bad cops.

Besides that, nobody is born a cop, ferchrissakes. We’re not treading on a marginalized minority here.

Well, I have a friend who works with a bunch of “green-skins” He is very unhappy in a job where the majority of his coworkers are bad. He includes “green-skins” willing to ‘look the other way’ as bad “green-skins” Therefore ALL “green-skins” I meet must be bad.

If there’s one thing for sure, an anecdote about your friend’s “bad” cop coworkers should be used to besmirch ALL cops countrywide.

I see. So any group consisting of people that are not BORN into that group can generally be assumed to be the same as the worst members of that group?

In your goofy head, I suppose. But, really, don’t let me stop you from pretending you don’t understand the point.

Then why bring up the fact that nobody is born a cop? What relevance does that have?
