Controversial encounters between law-enforcement and civilians - the omnibus thread

The cop has resigned.

I hear Arnold’s voice in my head. *****Resign or be prosecuted!

This is the part that likely wouldn’t go well with me in such an encounter. There were two recent incidents, one in Indiana, one in Atlanta, where the inciting event was a black person refusing to give personal information/show ID to some random white person that demanded to know their address. Yeah, I can see the average white person coughing up that info for a strange person of color who “hasn’t seen them around.”

Yeah, but based on past history he’ll be working as a police officer in another jurisdiction before the end of the month.

It will be “investigated” until it blows over, and then swept under the rug.

How’s this for afun article:

The police chief in a small Florida town is accused of encouraging his officers to pin unsolved crimes on random, nearby black people so the department would have a better arrest record, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.

Boy, I really don’t have anything to add to that.

Yeah, but that’s just one isolated instance of a corrupt police department. It’s not like PDs in other cities are doing anything corrupt like that.

Oh wait:

1,700 cases affected by corrupt Baltimore police Gun Trace Task Force, State’s Attorney Mosby says

Ferguson Police Routinely Violate Rights of Blacks, Justice Dept. Finds

That’s probably just the media though. The media is to blame for those instances.

Well, that’s just good old-fashioned police work.

Chicago Cop’s Viral Video Exchange With 2 Men Spurs Investigation

I suppose the silver lining is that no one was shot.

Perhaps. But FTR, this is the Forest Preserves tweet:
Effective today, Officer Patrick Connor no longer serves in the police department of the Forest Preserves of Cook County. He resigned late today. But that isn’t where our work ends.
And here’s their longer facebook post: Forest Preserve District of Cook County
As we announced last night, Officer Patrick Conner no longer serves in the police department of the Forest Preserves of Cook County. He resigned late in the day yesterday, while our investigation was still underway. Further, his personnel file will reflect that this officer did not resign in good standing, with a note indicating he left the district with “discipline pending”. …

I am sincerely sorry this happened. I’ve seen the video, and I am outraged that this would happen anywhere, but especially sad it happened in our Forest Preserves.

Clearly, our work isn’t done.

Certain aspects of the investigation are continuing…
Police reform is a heavy lift. The Forest Preserves seems to be making the right sort of noises: we should give better policies the respect they are due, while maintaining standards. It’s difficult to see other ways forward.

… this time.

Chicago; right now;

Was listening to a police scanner early this evening and heard it. Guy had a holster and police did find magazines and a pistol on his person.

Seemed as though he did not comply when they told him to put his weapon down and put his hands up.

District 3 (Woodlawn) I believe it was, 460.075Mhz

I think there are apps that allow you to tune into different frequencies for phones, in case there are future protests so you can get an earful of what goes on.

This most recent Chicago shooting seems to me to another case of citing the wrong incident in support of your cause. I don’t know what could be considered controversial about this one. That body cam video is pretty clear.

I haven’t seen it yet, but in some cases things are controversial because we don’t have all the information needed to accurately assess events. This seems to be one of those cases, from accounts I’ve read.

I just watched the video embedded within this AP story. There is no audio from the body cam, but the description of events from someone who seems to be a witness doesn’t seem to match with the video footage. I thought Superintendent Johnson did a great job with his decision-making, his consultation with the family of the deceased and his interpretation of the police department’s mission and purpose.

I looks like there are more cameras with footage tho, and possibly 2 with audio, so there may still be more new information coming forth. We’ll see eventually, eh.

But what initiated the interaction (can’t watch video at work). From a quoted news article above:

What the heck does that mean? And why isn’t the NRA jumping in here to defend the 2nd Amendment?

Minneapolis for this one:

Not just a hate crime, IMO; this was attempted murder.

And the cops acted like fucking idiots; thank Og they didn’t fucking kill anyone.

Here’s the video.

Perhaps the boys were “exhibiting characteristics of an armed person”?

When you see what the story is, you prolly won’t be surprised to learn that it’s from Jasper, Alabama.

It was even poorer judgement not to fire these racists immediately, IMO.

The picture is at the top of the linked page. Counting from left, #1, 2, 5 & 6 are all flashing an upside down ok sign.
