Good news. I hope the policy spreads everywhere.

I have posted this before as a joke. Now, I think it may actually be accurate.
Palm Beach Gardens (FL) Nouman Raja’s trial starts tomorrow (21 Feb 2019).
He is charged with manslaughter and attempted first-degree murder for the 2015 shooting of Corey Jones. Jones, a 31-year-old black musician, had just gotten out of his broken-down SUV when he was confronted by Raja, who was dressed in plainclothes and driving an unmarked white van. The shooting happened amid several highly publicized killings of black men by police officers nationwide, some leading to prosecutions. Raja, 41, could face a life sentence if convicted.
Good news. I hope the policy spreads everywhere.
This. I hope it spreads and becomes universal.
Some possibly good news for a change.
States cannot ignore the Constitution when imposing fines or confiscating people’s property in civil or criminal cases, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled Wednesday.
The decision in Timbs v. Indiana means there will be changes in the widespread and chronically abused law enforcement tactic of civil asset forfeiture. This was a unanimous ruling.
It is estimated that four out of five asset forfeiture cases nationwide do not feature a criminal conviction. In many cases, the person whose things get taken never even gets charged with a crime, let alone convicted of one. These civil forfeitures have become a key revenue-raising tool for prosecutors’ offices and police agencies — a broken incentive structure that has made dubious property confiscations (robbery) common around the country.
The ruling states what should have been obvious all along — that the Eighth Amendment’s “excessive fines clause” applies in state and local courts not just federal ones.
Law enforcement groups have virulently opposed past efforts to curb the abuse potential (legalized robbery) baked into a system where people with guns and badges get materially rewarded from illegitimate thefts of private property.
This chapter in the ongoing saga of Portland pisses me off. Ahead of a Patriot Prayer rally, Police informed their leader that it would be treated as a ‘mutual combat’ situation.
“Mutual combat is a law that states that, it’s something that happens in a lot of bars and stuff, if two guys go outside and they both agree to fight, kinda like training or whatever, no charges can be pressed, which I understand, I get that,” Gibson explained, incorrectly. “So basically if you want to be able to march in Portland, and the Portland citizens disagree with you, and they choose to use violence, you’re going to have to defend yourself.” Some of Patriot Prayer’s supporters interpreted all this as a kind of carte blanche for violence.
OK, the fuzz were apparently hoping for a melee that they could hang on “Antifa”.
After that Aug. 4 event, when a number of issues arose about how police handled the inevitable violence after … a large knot of Proud Boys bent on fighting … descended on Portland from outside the city, Sgt. Burley peculiarly blamed the SPLC for the alerting the public to the looming protest. “I think it is disheartening that an organization outside the City of Portland is making a statement that could potentially inflame an already intense situation” …
That makes me angry. Blame the (out-of-towner) SPLC for those (out-of-towner) guys being assholes.

This girl is my new hero.
Yup!
In the close competition for America’s Worst State, Arizona stakes its claim once again with this case of police brutality. The officer most involved “was suspended for 30 hours and remains an active officer on the force.” But of course, there’s no institutional component to police misconduct; it’s just a few bad apples.
Thirty hours. After three other suspensions and two reprimands.

@orangestreetnewNOTE: People have been requesting how they could donate to the OSN. Thank you but I am proud to say that for the past five years the OSN has turned a profit because of my journalism. There are many great causes that I am sure can use help, but I am not one of them. But thank you.
Nothing but respect for her.

Jesus, what do you have to do to get fired as a cop in Glendale?

12-Year-Old Rapper Lil C-Note Facing Felony Charges For Selling CDs At Atlanta Mall
charges include obstruction of an officer, disorderly conduct with violence, and criminal trespassing.
I guess its off to kick over some little kid’s lemonade stand next. Hopefully this will be a boon for him as the kid was featured on Ellen a couple of years ago so he has a good understanding of marketing/exposure.
I donno. In the linked article the kid had already been warned after being caught selling CDs in the mall. He had been issued a criminal trespass warning.
There is probably surveillance video. This is one I’d like to see more then the clip show.
