Convert M4P to .mp3

Or .wav I suppose.

I have two songs in iTunes that I would like to convert to MP3.

Everything out there is 35-40 dollars.

Does anyone know of a free app or another way to do this?

Thanks.

m4p seems to be iPod DRMed mpeg-4 audio.

So, first you need to get rid of the copy-protection and then convert to mp3/wave.

hymn seems to take care of the first step. This step is of unknown, probably, dubious legality. IANAL. Do it at your own risk.

Second step would be to head on over to the free Media Convert or someplace similar and it should be pretty self-explanatory.

You can do it for free with iTunes itself.

Select the files and burn them to an audio CD. Then, rip the CD back in as MP3 files.

ETA: Forgot to say that Apple allows you to export their M4P files to audio CDs up to seven times. There is apparently no such limitation on their “iTunes Plus” songs.

Thanks.

But.

When I select the file in iTunes and then choose File>export the only file type it will allow me to export it to is a .txt.

I can and do have the two m4p files on CD. But importing it does not give me an option to convert it.

Change your import preferences. I don’t know where this is in the Windows version of iTunes, but on the Mac, it’s Preferences -> Advanced -> Importing.

Ok.

I think I found the preferences.

I created a new song list. I choose File>Import and then choose the M4P from the disk. And Open.

Nothing happens.

I just don’t see it.

I can’t find an export option. Where is it? It’s not listed in iTunes help either.

I’m a windows user. Nothing on the iTunes software is intuitive to me. I’ve searched and searched. There is no export.

You don’t export it.
The converted file ends up in the iTunes Library. You can then drag it to the desktop, or right-click on the file to show you where to file itself is, and get it from there.

Apple has specifically made it hard to pirate songs to satisfy the RIAA and ASCAP, so don’t expect iTunes to make it easy to copy protected music.

Converted? I have not been able to convert anything. But I assumed that I would be able to use purchased music in a player other than an iPod.

It is still M4P.

show you where to file itself is?

ehh? I have the file in my machine. In M4P. It sounds like Apple will let you convert it to an mp3, but I can’t find it on iTunes.

Well that’s OK. I thought that I would be able to puchase files from iTunes and be able to use them in a player other than an iPod.

Bolding mine.

I’m being a pain in the ass, I know it. But the M4P songs (both of them) will not burn to CD because of copy protection.

Fine. So a song purchased from iTunes will only play on an iPod?

Yes, purchased music will only play on an authorized device, of which iPods and iTunes are the only examples.

However, everything I’ve read on the web says that you CAN make CDs of purchased music. For example: xat.com Forum
unless something has changed recently.

You don’t export to CD. You “burn” to CD. There’s a button on the bottom of the iTunes window.

Create a playlist (with just your two songs), and hit “Burn CD” once you have a blank, writable CD in the drive.

Did that. It won’t let me. I get an error that it is copy protected.

That’s probably neither here nor there since I would just end up with copies of the M4P’s anyway. I already have them on my hard drive.

I have a program called ‘Video Edit Magic’. I am just trying to put together a picture and still shot CD of my Wifes Ironman race (she finished. 16 hours, 22 minutes and 29 seconds).

Video Edit Magic will not accept M4P. I’m really not trying to rip off the music industry. I just want to be able to use the songs I BOUGHT in a simple CD for my Wife.

If that’s illegal. Well, fuck um. (yes I’m getting tired and cranky).

Never mind

Make sure your burning preferences are set to burn an audio CD. It won’t work if MP3 CD is selected.

That’s what I have selected. Both songs show 1kb on the CD. I suspect they are just some sort of pointers. A shortcut if you will.

Now what? How do you ‘import’ or load those short cuts as an mp3?

It ain’t gonna happen is it.

There is no way that the full songs got burned to the CD.

(I’m a programmer by the way. I hate iTunes.)

Can you play the songs in iTunes? You seem to be saying that you imported them as M4Ps from a CD–i.e. you got them from elsewhere, not from the iTunes store.

If you can’t play them, then you’re screwed (legally.)

Where did you get that?

I bought them from iTunes. I can play them with iTunes.

I did not get them from another source.

I would like to be able to cut them to an mp3 so I can play these two songs on another device.

^ Is where I got it from, but nevermind then.

Try calling Apple and ask their support people, I guess.

Thanks all.

I got it.

After a download and reinstall of iTunes 8. It allowed me to create mp3s.

Simple. Bingo bango like it should be.

Sorry. Perhaps a lot to do about nothing. But I was getting a bit pissed off.

Thanks again
