Anyone have any experiences having a left hand drive car to right hand drive? I am going to make calls around tomorrow to get estimates, but I’m wondering if it’s an effective conversion, safe, reliable, all that good stuff. I guess there are other adjustments that need to be made as well; realigning the lights, etc. Any info in that regard?
The car in question is a 1995 Toyota Camry; automatic. Not sure what other information would be relevant.
Is it an expensive process? Even if it cost 5K, converting and shipping the car would be less expensive than buying the equivalent in the new location.
Where are you shipping the car to ? Here in the Philippines RHD cars are changed to LHD for only a few hundred dollars. Of course, the mechanics here are only paid $5 a day, so everything is cheaper here. They basically just cut the dash into pieces and switch everything right to left. Depends upon where you are going.
Have you considered what customs fees might be imposed, and how much bribes are going to be ? (depending upon where you are shipping the car) Here in the Phils, the bribes paid at customs can easily be more than the value of the car.
uh is there some regulation where your car MUST be RHD? People drive RHD cars in the U.s just fine. I’m thinking it wouldn’t be that hard to adjust to LHD.
The country the car is going to is South Africa, which unfortunately does prohibit operating a LHD drive car.
Because it’s an old car, the customs fees are manageable. Even the shipping fee is a lot less that I was expecting it to be.
If this is possible at all, the cost will be prohibitive. The firewall, an integral part of the unit body, is completely different between LHD and RHD on all the cars I’ve looked at. The steering assembly is probably different rather than just flipped over. And of course the entire dash would have to be taken out and replaced. If you can find someone who’s actually performed the conversion, you may find out I’m wrong, of course.
