Convince me NOT to by an Ionic Breeze

Ok, here’s the deal. I am planning on using part of my tax refund to buy two Ionic Breeze Quadra’s (not the new, more expensive Ionic Breeze with a UV light germ thingy).

So, before making this $525 investment, can you wonderful Dopers convince me this is a bad filter and guide me to a better way to clean my filthy air!

They’re expensive, and they don’t work. A regular HEPA filter is cheaper and works.

They also make the air taste funny. I was in the bar in the east Village called the Raven, kind of a gothy place. Any way, they had these filters and everything ha d a strage mettalic taste to it that got very strong the closer you got to the filter. It just made me want to get drunker so I woudn’t notice such things.

There’s no fan, so how does the air get sucked into the unit to become purified? To me, it just means the air near the Ionic Breeze is purified…

Also , if you’re dead set on getting one, get a re-furbished one on E-Bay for about 175 bucks.

I am glad someone posted this question, because I have been wanting one too. Scylla, I have checked out the kind you are talking about. Aren’t the filters expensive to replace? How often would you need to replace one? Every month? Hmmm. I don’t think I will be buying one after this thread. They are kinda expensive.

Don’t forget the smell, it REEKS people
Unless you want to be perpetually plastered don’t bother buying one

I really like mine. I smoke, and it clears the air quickly. No added fileter expense is a bonus, as is the silent operation.

And there are serious moral implications in liking something that I like. So don’t do it, for your sake.

I like mine as well. I used to have one of those hepa filters, but the filters are expensive, and the fan is noisy. Plus, I like the smell of the ionized air, it’s like the air after a thunderstorm. Which is something that is far to rare here in California. The ones that stink are probably never cleaned.

So uh.the smell might cause flashbacks of scary thunderstorms and cause anxiety…yeah.
