I’ve always been a bit interested in astronomy, and as a kid I was just waiting for Halley to return. I am baffled as to why I didn’t see Ikeya-Seki and West.
I stood in the shadow of the eaves of my house at local noonish, and it took quite a bit of trying (ok, like 20-30 minutes; it was a bitch!), but I managed to spot it using some 10x50 binocs. I could see the bright head, and a bit of the tail. It was to the left and a little south from the sun’s position, at a distance from the sun of about the width of my fist held at arms length (just like spaceweather.com said).
I’m heading for the coast later to catch a comet-sunset. Awesome!
Saw it tonight! I went out at five-ish, after sunset, but still light. It is nice and bright, but in a big sky, it took me a bit to figure out where the sun had set. And there it was! It’s cold and clear here, so the circumstances were ideal. Pretty comet!
Dammit. I did not see it tonight, even though I was high up on a cliff on the California coast, and it was a cloudless sunset. Me and about a dozen other gazers looked in vain until it was fairly dark and the sun glow was all but gone.
Yeah, same here. I took a stroll along Newport Beach and spent about half an hour searching for it after the sun set. There were some small tufts of cloud on the horizon, but I still should’ve been able to see something…
