Lead singer. You can find examples of the guitarist being more prominent - Townsend, Page, etc. But those are exceptions. Otherwise, guitar geeks geek over the obscure guitarist or rare bassist, but 99% of people don’t notice them.

I’d rather not be Roth or Van Halen. Have you seen those guys lately? Here’s a little Tale from the Crypt!

ETA: Little Nemo’s point is valid, although 2/3 of the “better” people he names are dead, so not sure I’d want to be them!

Guitarist.

  1. Doesn’t have to rest his vocals so can party all night
  2. Has skills other dudes want to emulate

Put it this way: the bass is the coolest instrument. But I have to admit that the coolest band member is either the guitarist or the singer unfortunately. I’ll pick the guitarist.
