Howdy. I’m thinking of getting a new car (I’m 18) and was wondering your opinions on what was the coolest/best car of the ones I’m considering. I currently own a convertible Geo-Metro (I love convertibles), but I really want to stay away from a car that promotes ridicule
Here are the cars I’ve thought about:
Toyota MR2 Spyder (Looks badass IMO; $25k)
Dodge SRT-4 (Also Looks Cool, and the fastest of the lot; $20)
Subaru Impreza WRX (2nd Fastest, Looks Cool Too; $25k)
A car I really like is the Mazda Protege5. It’s not as fast or powerful as the WRX but it is much less expensive. It’s a station wagon (I think Mazda might call it a sport wagon - whatever). I know at 18 you probably don’t care much about practicality, but the Protege5 is certainly practical. It would cost less to won, I’d imagine than the WRX.
I really want one, alas,my money is required elsewhere. Enjoy the new car!
Perhaps the Japanese original (it was toned down to meet US emission standards), but the SRT-4 does 0-60 in 5.6 and the WRX in 5.7, the difference increases further up to their top speed (The SRT 4 has a higher topspeed.)
Between those choices I would say the WRX. That car is a lot of fun especially if you can take it off road. But you should check out the Nissan 350Z. It’s a bit pricey but it is worth it. Or you could wait a few months for the Mazda RX-8. For my taste, I think it is kind of ugly but its motor is a new version of the rotary and it is more powerful than the old turbos. Also, from what I have been reading about it, the car handles like a champ.
Disclaimer: I have owned two RX-7’s and I am infatuated with rotary motors so I am biased.
You could also consider the Mustang GT. It’s in the same price range (low-mid 20s) looks nice and faster than the 3 you listed (the WRX is close competition).
Dude, you should totally get a Honda Civic with a big giant tail pipe and a monstrous fin on the back. Phat! It will only cost you about $3,000, and you can use the other $20,000 for the stereo, window tints, neon license plate frame, mag wheels, No Fear stickers and giant pants.
Oh, and if looks and speed are your primary concerns, you may want to set aside some money for a nice coffin…
Only 230bhp, but with an all up weight of 460kilos this car is like a skateboard with a rocket motor bolted to it.
It goes around corners like on rails and is completely impractical as a mundane transport drone, this is built just for fun, and looks like it.
I think that for an 18 year old, the best convertible you could get for your money without paying ridiculous insurance is a Mazda Miata! Also know as the MX-5 here in the UK, it was my first car , so i’m obviously biased. Very cool, very affordable, and very amenable to modification. Stick a Jackson Racing superchrger in there, and you’ll be doing 0-60mph in under 6 seconds! I kid you not. Also available with leather interior, cd player, etc. You can get some incredibly sexy body kits, but the stock car is Very cool as it is.
I don’t know many topless cars. The ones you might look at in your price range (doing the converstion for Canadian in my head) might be the RSX (S if you can afford it) a Celica GTS, a Matrix XRS (what I have now) or a Tiberon (yeah yeah, I know what some might think of this car).
If you can shell out $25K and you’re 18, I don’t think insurance will be an issue…will it? If it is, the Matrix is pretty cheap to insure because it’s a wagon. My friend’s WRX isn’t impressive to me (not for 42K CAN) and he pays more for insurance than I do for a car payment. The RSX is really nice as is the Celica but both are 2 doors and not topless.
This thread scares the living daylights out of me.
Let’s see- 18 year old male (possible skate-rat), wants small, fast “cool” car. I hope you have excellent insurance, and that whoever you involve in the accident survives.
The WRX isn’t 42K Canadian. It’s $34,995, loaded. There are no options.
Subaru just announced the WRX STi. 300 HP, 0-60 in 4.7 seconds. And it’s got a computer controlled center differential with driver adjustable controls in the cockpit, a 6-speed manual, 17-inch wheels, and more. On paper, it’s a supercar as fast as a Viper, but with better handling and AWD. It’ll be close to 50K Canadian, though ($32K US).
I have no idea what the hell a “skate-rat” is, but I can assure you my s/n is not a reflection of myself, in any discernable way. It was merely two random works that popped into my head so no one would be able to identify who I was (I had a previous account that I stopped using). See? Simple, eh?
Are you looking for road racing? Drag racing? Or just cool street looks?
What do you want to do with the car. Answer that first, and you will have narrowed it down considerably.
Oh, and Dante…
Yeah. back at ya. There are such things as RACE TRACKS, drag and auto-x. They’re legal. Don’t assume anything. Also, just because you make a car “fast” doesn’t mean that it’s instantly unsafe. If I owned a Lamborghini does that mean I’ll drive unsafely? Anyway, Dante can hate all he wants…
I’d say Acura RSX Type-S all the way, but… I am biased.
Someday, you’ll realize what you wanted in the car the whole time was speed. Maybe not over-the-speed-limit-and-die speed, but being able to pass that jack-ass going under the speed limit without waiting 10 seconds for your car to gain enough speed.
Convertables are heavy. I’ve raced a Honda S2000 and won by a couple car-lengths. Yes, he knew it was a race, so it’s not like I was racing the unknowing or unwilling (he’s a friend of mine).
All I’ve done (performance-wise) to my RSX so far is AEM Short-Ram Intake, Comptech Cat-Back Exhaust, and Eibach Sportline Springs. This summer might mean Turbo ($4000 or so) and around 315hp total.
Feel free to catch the fever of auto-tuning, meet up with people in your area that are into it. You’ll be the newbie and the outsider at first, but as long as you don’t act like you know things that you don’t know, they’ll probably help you learn.
