Coolest machine ever?

I still like watching that donut making thig-a-ma-jig at Krispe Kreme.

Here’s the official page of the Falkirk Wheel. This page describes how it works.

The usual method of raising/lowering a boat is by use of a canal lock. But at Falkirk, one canal is 115 ft higher up than the other, requiring a flight of 11 locks. The Wheel takes place of all those locks.

That’s a really cool site. It does beg the question however, was there no limit to Victorian engenuity?

None.
I greatly admire the Victorians.

If I win the big powerball prize, I’ll erect a bronze statue to their achievements.

Without question, the Telharmonium. Not only was it the largest musical instrument ever and the first to generate its tones electrically, it was also far and away the strangest idea ever hatched by an Iowan.

What about the Iowa Cacuses?

Damn, and here I was thinking this would be another Sybian thread.

(I don’t imagine there are work-safe links, so I’m not gonna try.)

Gotta agree with the OP here. It’s made of flat sides and straight lines but still moves as naturally as a real animal. Very awesome.

An honorable mention should probably go to Hardiman I, which had the slight problem of not totally working right. (The arms worked, at least. Well, one arm for sure, that I know of.)
