I’m sorry to hear it.
I saw that image posted on Facebook. A Covidiot was pooh-poohing it, snarking that the study was based on “self-reported” practices.
Unless there’s a massive conspiracy afoot, these types of self-reporting obscure effects. For example, people who claim to wear a mask but don’t or they wear them wrong. Then it appears that masks don’t work.
Lying the other way around requires people to believe mitigation strategies to work, but everyone just wants to fuck around with scientists. So people would lie and say they didn’t wear a mask but did or they say they went out in public in the past two weeks but they never did. And the liars’ results would have to demonstrate that the results would match laboratory and previous studies with Healthcare workers.
Case count update as of February 6
Worldwide:
395,493,143 total cases
5,755,881 dead
314,102,557 recovered
In the US:
78,001,369 total cases
925,794 dead
47,939,340 recovered
Differences in last 11 days:
Worldwide:
32,430,850 total cases
109,997 dead
27,200,754 recovered
In the US:
3,824,966 total cases
27,114 dead
2,518,022 recovered
January 26ths numbers for comparison:
As of Monday morning the Johns Hopkins Coronavirus New Reported Cases map is in the blue for every state, which means rates of cases are decreasing. The most recent record high in Daily Reported Cases (7-day average) seems to be Maine last Friday, Feb 4 2022, when they had 1131 new cases. All the other states peaked weeks ago.
The US continues to fall globally, reporting just under 220,000 daily cases. We actually seem to be reporting fewer daily cases than France (just under 260,000 cases) for the first time since possibly ever.
Finally signs of progress on this stupidity might be under way…
Let’s get this nonsense contained and dealt with ASAP.
Did they say anything about the attempted arson of that apartment building?
Maybe not merely attempted arson. Completed arson. As I read it, they did start a fire, although it was quickly put down.
Apparently, they post just after midnight GMT, so I missed the numbers for Sunday.

What do you mean by “globally”?
Up at the top of the table is a button labeled “Yesterday” and one to its right labeled “2 Days Ago”. Click on them to get the final table from those days. In fact, I suggest you wait until after they reset the table for the new day and get the numbers from the Yesterday table, just so you don’t miss any last minute updates.
You have to be very careful with those sort of studies.
Unless it is truly random and includes all the preventative behaviours taken by the population involved then it is difficult to know what contribution the mask has made to any overall reduction.
i.e. People more likely to wear a mask are potentially more likely to take greater care over social contact etc. People who take the time, care and expense to source and wear high-filtration masks may be even more inclined to take additional care.
indeed, the first line in the report paragraph that talks about limitations states
this study did not account for other preventive behaviors that could influence risk for acquiring infection, including adherence to physical distancing recommendations
That is a huge, huge caveat and there are plenty of others in there.
Personally I don’t think there is any doubt that mask-wearing (and specifically the type of mask) will have an effect on infection rate, but the bald figures in that graphic have a massive asterisk against them. Using it as a slam-dunk argument when it is so easy to pick holes in it would be a mistake.
Cervid Covid:
Covid in becoming wide-spread and endemic in the wild deer population, which will be impossible to eradicate. It presents a danger of becoming a breeding-ground for yet more Covid variants, as well as an on-going source of re-infection to humans and pets.

(ETA: TIL Deer are cervids.)
Jeez – if I stop spelling everything out under the assumption that I’ve stated things enough times, I’m inevitably questioned by someone who hasn’t read my earlier posts.
On the plot of global new reported cases of COVID (seven-day average), the US as a whole continues to decline. It’s down to about 200,000 cases right now (per day, I emphasize). That sounds like a lot, but a.) it’s literally 1/4 of what it was a couple of weeks ago and b.) it’s about level with France’s number of daily reported cases, which is really something.
As of today, the entire IS map on that page is in the blue, except for one state with a rising trend – Mississippi. But even they are far below the record high number of daily cases reported on January 21.
In a reversal due to falling cases and lower positivity:

Good news! All states are still in the Blue on the Johns Hopkins newly reported COVID cases map, except for Mississippi and Alabama 9indicated increasing rates), but no new record highs, continuing a trend that has lasted a week. The US as a whole is still around 200,000 cases per day, way down from its peak of about 4 times that, and mingling with the case rate of countries like France and Russia.
@Morgyn, I wanted to thank you for taking up the mantle. I missed the daily numbers and am glad to see them back.
You’re welcome, but I still hope @Snowboarder_Bo comes back. I’m ADD and overloaded at work, so I suspect I won’t be as reliable as he has been.
Yeah, I’ll add my thanks too, @Morgyn. And I agree with you - come back @Snowboarder_Bo, we miss you!
