Coronavirus general discussion and chit-chat

So I said a coworker and his wife at another company have Covid. (It turned out our Admin only had a cold.) Our Customer Service person wasn’t in the office Tuesday, nor yesterday. The president said she was out being tested. I found out after the meeting that she gave the Collections manager a ride when he needed some car maintenance done, and had lunch together while they were out. IOW, they were in close proximity for a while.

We have a small office. There are 14 of us, and some people are ‘never’ in physically there. I found out yesterday that five of us are not vaccinated. (It would have been six, but one guy got Covid and decided to get his shots as soon as he recovered. Second shot several days ago. He should be fully vaccinated in a week or so.) Of the five unvaccinated people, one thought she might have Covid (she didn’t), one definitely has it, and one was out for testing yesterday.

ETA: Wifey RN said that if she’d known everyone wasn’t vaccinated, she wouldn’t let me go to the office. She said I have to stay in the basement, and not go up to socialise in the kitchen.

And she would put your food on a mat outside the basement door, amirite?

Seriously, that many unvaccinated people in a small space is scary. As I’ve reported elsewhere, my cell phone has been undergoing repair for the past week or so, and they guy I’ve been dealing with is unvaccinated. Here he is interacting with the public all day every day. He is masked, so some small acknowledgment of the danger of COVID. When I asked him why he isn’t vaxed, “Oh, I’m not sure about the vaccine. You know, some people have died from it. And anyway, I have so much positive energy, that will protect me.” :woman_facepalming:t4: He’s 35.

The basement at the office. We don’t have one.

I don’t openly talk politics at the office, and I haven’t directly asked people about their vaccinated status. One unvaccinated person is (I think) a Trump supporter. One of the sick ones is a nice, friendly guy but I’m pretty sure he leans Conservative. The one being tested and the one who turned out not to have it seem to be hesitant because she’s worried about unknown side-effects. The last one is only 28 and wears a mask faithfully. No idea what her deal is.

Well, don’t expect her to drive all the way over there to put your food outside the door. :stuck_out_tongue:

Our highly-efficient, terrific word processor has been out sick since Wednesday of last week. No one in management here at work is saying anything.

I don’t know her politics, but I know her personality. She’s a cowgirl, a smoker, and likes to hang out at a redneck bar near her home (and near mine - she lives somewhat close to me). I know that that redneck bar opened up again a couple of months ago, and has a patio which is completely concealed from the street.

I hope she’s okay.

First time I’ve seen a projection. Maybe if this were more widely known… (But I doubt that even this would promote more vaccines. Sigh.)

Another fully vaccinated work colleague has covid. He says it’s been like a real case of influenza. Cough, congestion, fatigue. He also has a diminished sense of smell. No really serious effects so far. He has been in to the office at times, masked always.

We were just told that a person who sits near him in the office is expected to be out for at least week or so. (Informing us who will be covering for them). I am guessing that person has it now, too. Masks are required onsite, so I presume they had been wearing one too. Not sure of her vaccination status.

No one is working full time at our office – you have to ask to be scheduled if you want to come in, because there are stringent limits for how many people can be in the same part of the office at the same time.

It has ramped up my already considerable anxiety about delta.

My vaccinated self came down, starting day before yesterday afternoon, with severe fatigue, muscle aches, headache, chills. I scheduled a covid test for tomorrow (soonest I can get it). It’s probably just from all the exercise I’ve been doing lately (1-2 hours a day) catching up with me, but better safe than sorry. I am isolating. I’ll know by Monday.

Is there a faster way to get a test that’s reliable? Mail order PCR or whatever it’s called?

I took myself to the closest Urgent Care clinic and called them from the parking lot. A lady in full PPE came out and swabbed me, then I sat in my car for 10 minutes until they called me with my results. Is that an option for you?

I did that last time, last year, went to the closest urgent care. It took like 6 days to get results, and they didn’t even call me, I had to call and bug them. My local Walgreen’s has a drive through site that promises results in 1-2 days, so I went with that but Saturday was the first available appointment.

6 days fore results, OUCH!!!

Sadly, I have no other suggestions, but I will send hopes that its going to end up to be unneeded anyhow because you are negative.

I’ve been wondering: if it’s possible to get long Covid even with a mild case and/or being vaccinated, is it possible for the long Covid symptoms to be more severe than they were while directly sick?

With more Covid there are more delays for testing. When we needed to test my daughter, (she was negative) we went through our doctor’s office, which meant a telephone appointment and then a drive up test the next day. Results took 2 days. The test was free.

We looked into other options, but decided against them. Cheap at home tests with quick results were all sold out, and they are less reliable. We could have paid ~$100 to get a rapid antigen test (like the at home tests) or a same day PCR test, but decided against that.

Since then, I’ve ordered 2 home tests to have on hand, from CVS, where they said they were in stock. I’ve since been notified that due to high demand, my order is “delayed” and they’ll let me know when it ships. No delivery estimate…

I was just in Walgreens so I checked. They had a dozen or so of the 15 minute tests in stock. This one was in the Chicago area.

Did you get it resolved?

Yes! I called the pharmacy. They said that in Washington, a lot of the doses didn’t get recorded properly at the state, especially the early ones. The pharmacy had been re-sending a lot of info as people have let them know. I’ll check in a few weeks and see if it got updated. Thanks again!

I think I checked the next day, or possibly two days later, and my record had been updated.

Great! I’ve been telling everyone I know to check their records now, before they need it for anything.

Complete headline:
A Calif. elementary school teacher took off her mask for a read-aloud. Within days, half her class was positive for delta.

The Marin County, Calif., elementary school had been conscientious about following covid-19 protocols. Masks were required indoors, desks were spaced six feet apart, and the students kept socially distant. But the delta variant found an opening anyway.

On May 19, one teacher, who was not vaccinated against the coronavirus, began feeling fatigued and had some nasal congestion. She dismissed it as allergies and powered through. While she was usually masked, she made an exception for story time so she could read to the class .

By the time she learned she was positive for the coronavirus two days later, half her class of 24 had been infected — nearly all of them in the two rows closest to her desk — and the outbreak had spread to other classes, siblings and parents, including some who were fully vaccinated.

“The mask was off only momentarily, not an entire day or hours. We want to make the point that this is not the teacher’s fault — everyone lets their guard down — but the thing is delta takes advantage of slippage from any kind of protective measures,” Tracy Lam-Hine, an epidemiologist for the county, said in an interview.

My bold.

Yeah, it most certainly was the teacher’s fault. For not being vaccinated!

Agreed that this is the teacher’s fault. Also the teacher’s fault for dumbly “powering through” a year into a pandemic. That’s all we need to know.

Plus, this was in May, so who knows if delta was even involved. Probably any variety of Covid can infect with behavior like this.

I’m certainly not going to pay $$$ to see paywalled articles like these from the Post.
