From the time I bought my first car in 2004 until the day I rolled it onto its roof on Valentines Day this year, I diligently recorded the date, volume, price per litre, and odometer reading at each fill-up. I put all that data into an Excel sheet and a graph of lifetime cost per litre shows a roughly linear increase over time. (After 40,000 km, that is. The graph drops sharply from 0 to 8,000 km, then levels off to 40,000 km, then trends approximately linearly upwards.) One would expect that the cost per km will trend upward with inflation, assuming constant fuel efficiency. What I would like to do is correct this data for inflation, but I’m not sure how to find appropriate inflation data. I found some Stats Canada webpages for CPI, but no data for year to year CPI for the 2004-2013 timeframe. Can anyone offer any advice how to proceed? I can pass on my spreadsheet for anyone interested. Thanks!
It took some searching (I’ve always hated trying to find info from StatsCanada), but the page you want is CANSIM Table 326-0021
