That’s terrific!!!
Well, I got back up on the horse today after taking 2 weeks off due to shin splints (I think). Figured after the time off I’d do W6 one more time. The shin didn’t hurt when I was running, but was hurting a bit when I walked. I had a long uphill for my cooldown at the end, and that didn’t help.
Now, it hurts a good bit, and I’m hobbling around the house a little. I’m getting pretty frustrated by the whole thing, b/c lungs and muscles felt great during the run.
Labrador - in my experience, I’ve gotten shin splints when my shin muscles were not strong enough, and the end result when planting a foot down is that the heel would strike, and the front of the foot would follow with a ‘THWAP’ on every stride. I’ve especially found this to be true in the winter, when the soles of my shoes are much less flexible. Obviously not the case here, unless you are in southern australia. I’ve also found it to be the case when shoes I’m wearing are old.
It is pretty typical to have the lungs and muscles rearing to go, but some other aspect (usually soft tissue - as is often the case with shin splints) just haven’t caught up.
Keep up with it - you’ll get past it and the shin splints will be a thing of the past! (only problem is that once you get past one problem, the next bottleneck will be exposed). I’d much rather have shin splints as opposed to the irritated IT band I’m dealing with right now. sigh
Thanks for the advice, guys. I’ve made an appointment with an Orthopedist to see what’s going on here. After doing a good bit of reading, it sounds like I may have some other issue. There is a dull, yet significant pain at the front & inner part of my leg, about 2/3 of the way down. I have great shoes, I don’t think I slap my feet when I run, and I have arch support inserts.
I’m wondering if I haven’t done something to a tendon down there. It got so bad I could hardly go up the stairs yesterday.
Interesting stuff in both those links, some of which rings a few bells with me. Thanks for the links.
This link says that anterior shin splints are likely to be compartment syndrome, which is what I’m experiencing. I’m slowly getting better due to the running- I’m on week 3 and just ran for three minutes straight, a definite improvement.
I’ve thought about getting the surgery, but the recovery time is really long, so I’m hoping that running will eventually resolve the problem. There’s also danger of nerve damage with the surgery.
Starting Week 8 today. I don’t think that the 28 minutes will be that bad, really, but of course it’s scheduled to be 85-90 out there (I haven’t been out of the office yet). That part will suck.
Stay hydrated, Snickers! Even on 90-degree days, I still don’t feel that I’m running for long enough that I need to actually carry water with me, but I still make sure to drink well before a run, and then obviously afterward also.
As for the other stuff, I have occasional IT band soreness, but it never seems to last for long, which is good. I’ve been trying to make sure to do stretches that hit that area.
Just wanted to mention that it’s been exactly one year since I rose from the couch and started the C25K program. I too and struggled through those first 1 minutes runs, but have since run a half marathon and many 5Ks. I celebrated the anniversary by racing a 5K - in 20:34. 9 minutes faster than my first 5K.
It’s a fantastic program that I just can’t recommend enough.
After getting to week 7 last year I promptly quit when it got too cold. I’ve started back again and feel like such a wuss that week 3 is kicking my arse. I’m using the Ullreys podcasts and had forgotten about week 3. This is the one where you are nearly dead from your last run. Then the music dies down a bit “Ahh” you think “I’m finished” but no its just Robert popping in to say you have 1 minute left to go. I cursed him every step of that last minute.
Hrududu, good on you for getting back to the program. Do you have snow and ice where you live or is it just cold?
Dressing for cold means layering with wicking fabrics and a windproof, breathable outer shell. Cover your head, 40% of heat loss is from the head.
Oh, hells ya. I use three podcasts, alternating between Ullrey and a couple others. While finishing up week 7 last week, I was listening to Ullrey’s, and was fighting through those last few minutes. He came on, said, “OK,” and I stopped running because yay! I was done. Then I hear him continue “…only one more minute left.” I was all, “F*@k you, Robert.”
At least it was under my breath.
Well I was hoping to come back here and say, ‘week 2 was awesome!’ however, I picked up the flu or something Sunday. Finally through the body aches etc. but feels like everything has settled in my chest. It’s been almost a week since I ran, so may end up starting all over again once I’m feeling better. At least I’ll have a new pair of shoes this time!
W8D1 is over, D2 queued up for tonight. The first 28 minuter sucked, but mainly because I messed up and didn’t go the route I’d planned earlier and got all flustered, then had to spend the majority of it directly under the beating sun. That said, I did finish it (even if I spent the last four minutes chanting, "Gut it out…gut it out…gut it out.)
Hopefully tonight’s goes better. I’ll do the right route this time, that’s for sure anyway. But it’s still 90.
bumping the thread to report in:
just did week 6 day 2, two sets of 10 minutes runs
It went really well, I kept my running speed at a even 10k/h and my walking at a 5k/h
when I did the 20 min run last week I had to slow my speed down considerably(not that there is anything wrong with that…) but I would like to be able to do the 5k in 30 min on week 9 day 3
kitten out!
No snow or ice, just me being a wimp. Since I’ve been running in July and August I now appreciate running in the cold a whole lot more.
How is everyone measuring what speed they run at? Are you using special watches?
Euhm…I’m doing most of my runs on a treadmil, helps me keep my speed constant. when I run outside I keep starting to sprint, but I think I got the right step going now, so I could run outside now
only I like air conditioning and watching telly when running…
Amen to this. Not only is Mississippi too darn hot right now for me to even consider it: but Judge Judy is more fun to watch while on the treadmill.
I don’t know how you do it. Spending time on any indoor machine made me want to put my head through the nearest plate glass window.
