Couch-to-5K: Anyone with me?

I was scheduled for last night, but have picked up a killer sore throat so am holding off.

I was going to do week 2 day 3 yesterday but I had a godawful headache when I got off work and promptly passed out on the couch as soon as I got home. Once I woke up I got stuck making dinner and we had company so the night was shot. I’ll just pack my shoes and do it this weekend while I’m back home. I’ll have to do it outside and it’ll probably be like 90 so I am so looking forward to that (sarcasm).

As a side note, what’s the best way of keeping track of your time while you’re outside? I don’t have stop watch and I haven’t downloaded any podcasts (I wish they’d make one for the regular ipod that would allow you to listen to your own music!).

Also, how do you know if you’ve got the appropriate shoes for the job? I’ve been doing it in a pair of Reeboks (walking? running shoes?) I picked up for $5 on clearance after Christmas and so far they’ve been really comfortable and I haven’t felt like I’ve had any problems with them so far other than being a little wobbly while I run, but I blame that on the treadmill. I’ve got godawful balance on treadmills.

I think I’m going to redo week 1 day 3 again. Not because I don’t feel ready to progress, but because I want my weeks to start on Mondays instead of Fridays. Hoping this run tonight will be a little easier, I am definitely going to try running on the waterfront because worrying about traffic lights is a pain.

fizzes, I’ve just made my own playlist that matches the intervals, so I switch at every song change. It was hard making a playlist for week 1, because I only had 2 songs that were a minute long, but finding music that you like that’s 1:30 or 2 minutes probably won’t be too hard. I just sorted my music library according to song length (surely iTunes has this capability) and picked out songs that worked that are up-beat. My halfway point is a song called “No Guts No Glory” which really helps me keep going.

Help! (Not with the running, haven’t started that yet)

So I downloaded all the .mp4 podcasts for C25K and within iTunes they are all in my Podcasts section. I cannot figure out how to get them onto my iPod Shuffle however. I have created unique playlists for each week (C25K - Week 1, 2, 3, etc.) and added each week’s podcast to the corresponding playlist.

When I try to autofill to the iPod Shuffle from the specific playlist I get an error “iTunes cannot add any songs to the iPod ‘Michael’s iPod Shuffle’ because no songs in the playlist ‘C25K - Week 1’ can be copied to this iPod”

Anyone have this issue before?

Michael

fizzestothetop, for shoes you need to find a shop that caters to real athletes, preferably a running shoe store. RRCA, search for a running club in your area, they’ll know the good places.

For running outdoors, you’ll need some form of watch if you don’t go the podcast route.

Correction to previous post - they are .m4a files. In iTunes I selected the option to convert each one to .mp3 and it showed it was converting but I don’t see a .mp3 version of the file anywhere.

For the moment I am experiencing the unfamiliar feeling of motivation but can’t figure out the technical aspects of loading the podcasts! Gaaaaarrrrrr!!!

MeanJoe, if you’re using an ipod, you can just get the podcasts from itunes. That ought to be the easiest way to get them on your player. I believe you should be able to just drag them to it, but I’m really no itunes expert.

If that fails, here are the mp3 versions.

Well week 2 day 1 is over, and I feel great.

I am definitely running by the waterfront from now on, there’s a park there that’s beautiful and I can do 1.5 laps in the 25 minutes I’m running. It’s a very safe area as well, I ran there tonight and it’s extremely well-lit and populated.

I actually felt like running more by the end, although I didn’t. But it was great feeling like I could keep running, now I’m not so worried about later weeks.

Ahhh… I think I have my first runner’s high.

I did week 2 day 3 yesterday. I attempted it this weekend but it was outside, very hot/humid and there were hills involved and it just didn’t go well at all. I’ve decided eating dinner before hand (even if I wait an hour and a half before working out) is a bad idea. I just wanted to puke by the time I was done. So now I just need to stock up on bananas for a pre-workout snack. I just hate having to eat dinner at like 8:30 or 9.

I’ve decided to add yoga in for my off days too just to have something to do that isn’t quite as intense.

I was supposed to do Week 8 Day 1 this morning, but found a stray dog wandering around the neighborhood during my warmup walk so we ended up taking the poor guy to Animal Control (after walking about for two hours to try to find his owners). I had a disastrous run on Sunday – my head wasn’t in it at all due to some family issues, and I ended up running about a mile and a quarter and stopping. But I ran that one mile in 11 min 13 sec, a personal best!

It’s also about one million degrees here right now (actually, about 90 but it’s pretty humid) and I may not get my afternoon run in. But hey, sometimes life gets interesting, right? I may run later tonight. I feel like I should have repeated week 7, so I may just shoot for 1 1/4 miles tonight or tomorrow morning.

My first 5K is on Saturday, and I’m a bit nervous. I feel like I have a good pace and I know I can run two miles. If I have to walk a bit, I’ll walk. But my goal is to cross the finish line running.

I’m looking to sign up for a 5k soon. I know they always have a Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving, so maybe I’ll just sign up for that one.

I want to run today but I know I need to rest. Maybe I’ll go for a bike ride.

I’m starting week 1 day 1 tomorrow. I downloaded the podcasts for all 9 weeks and I’m excited to start. I was doing walk-jogging on my own, and I can tell that I’m jogging for longer periods, but it’s hard to really gauge without a plan. I double-checked my mp3 player to make sure the podcast is playing correctly and tomorrow I’m out there. I’m going to do Wed, Fri and Sun.

The breast cancer Race for the Cure 5k is in St. Pete October 3rd. I was hoping to be ready by then.

Oooh, that’s a good one. I certainly think I’ll be ready in 3 months.

I did Week 1 Day 2 yesterday. I’m not in awful shape (I ride my bike a ton: did a metric century a few weeks ago) but running is new to me, so we shall see how it progresses. with all the biking I do, though, I felt I needed some crosstraining, so this is it.

I did Week 1 Day 1 this morning. It was pretty easy, but I think that’s because I was doing a kind of walk/jog before, but I was running a little longer and taking reeeeeaaaaalllly long breaks in between. The second to last interval was the hardest for some reason. I was really psyched when I finished and I can’t wait to do Day 2 on Friday. I’m running with Ullrey’s podcasts. I don’t really like techno, but I’m finding it interesting enough to keep my mind off being out of breath. And I find his voice kind of soothing.

Tomorrow it’s 30 minutes with Tony Horton. I’m still sore from Tuesday.

Be aware that you will need a couple of months for your legs to adjust to the new demand.

Cool, good to know. That way I won’t get discouraged when I’m in week four and it sucks. It hasn’t been too bad yet, so we shall see.

I’ve been bad. I was waaay to hung over/tired to run on Saturday for my Week4 Day 3 and my dog escaped yesterday so I spent the afternoon getting him back from the pound and fixing my backyard so I didn’t do my run then either. I have to do a bunch of work on my yard Saturday so I’m thinking that I’m going to take a week off.

I always train better after a little rest and while I’m still swimming at lunch I think the off week is going to help me get back on track. When I come back I’m going to start off on Week 5 Day 1 and see how that goes I don’t I’ll have too many problems with it and I really want to get to W5D3 so I can just run for the whole distance.

I thought that said Tim Horton and was going to mention you’d need a lot of running to burn 30 minutes worth of that off.
