Could a Corporation buy a state?

Missed the edit window. Instead of the fruits and vegetables checkpoint entering the state, you would have a Non-Apple Products checkpoint where Apple employees with police power shook you down and seized Android phones and non-Mac laptops, and gave you a referral to the nearest California Department of Apple Products.

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of corporate ownership vs government. Possibly due to some vague notion that they both represent “authority” or “power” in some sort of nebulous way.

The fundamental difference between a corporation and a state government is that corporations are closed entities that can choose their members and their customers. A government is required to address the concerns of the entire population residing within the area it governs. In other words, the State of West Corporitopia, a division of Megagigantacorp can simply lay off the bottom %20 of it’s population for “underperforming”. At least not without experiencing the issues typically associated with depriving millions of people of basic services.

I don’t see how you could buy a state. Who would you be buying it from? California doesn’t belong to the United States in the sense of being a salable asset.

The only way I could see you acquiring ownership of a state is by convincing the people of that state to adopt a constitution that recognized you as the owner of the state - essentially a dictator - and convincing the United States government to sign off the arrangement. And I can’t imagine anyone coming close to making either of these things happen.
