Not really a trap, but I wasn’t sure what else to call it.
I have seen alligator hunters render an alligator less dangerous by wrapping his snout in duct tape, because, while their jaws can crush their prey, they lack the strength to open them if they are wrapped in tape.
Could a T-Rex be “de-fanged” in the same way?
Give me a minute, I’ll go try it on mine.
Certainly. It’s only a question of how much duct tape you need. It’s a good idea too, just capture a T. Rex, wrap the tape around his jaws, and then you will be perfectly safe.
Well if you could get the damn thing hold still while you tape or rope it’s jaws together perhaps… but it likely wouldn’t last too long. If it can reach it’s face with either it’s stubby arms or back feet it’ll rip the bindings off sooner or later. If it can’t reach it would try to rub them off against objects. You can wrap a dog’s jaws shut the same way and they’ll go squirrely trying to scrape the tape off.
Also, your t-rex would still be able to stand and run around. If a 2meter tall ostrich can maim you just by kicking and stomping, a muzzled t-rex wouldn’t exactly be harmless.
Is anyone else worried that bucketybuck isn’t back yet? It’s been a half hour.
Given that T. rex had an incredibly wide gape and was able to open its mouth far wider than a croc, I expect its muscles would be powerful enough to break duct tape like it wasn’t there. (Even if it were only as powerful as a croc, it was so much larger it could probably break duct tape just on that basis.)
It also had an incredibly powerful bite.
A hooded ostrich is docile, though.
Maybe hood the T Rex?
Master? I’m just not sure how well this plan was thought through.
I think we need Grant to build a robot to test this.
T-rex has a much shorter snout than an alligator so it would be more prone to slipping off. I don’t however think that a T-rex would be able to break duct tape merely by opening its mouth. Animals are generally much better at closing on something than opening.
Duct tape has a tensile strength of only 22 lbs. Mythbusters measured it as taking a force of 67.3 lbs to break it (which was more than they expected).
I just tried it and it was very easy for me, an old guy with no serious arm strength, to rip several different kinds of duct tape without even trying very hard. Puny humans can very easily rip apart duct tape.
T. rex wouldn’t have the slightest trouble breaking out of duct tape. There was enough flexibility in the snout that it could have exerted enough force to the side to rip it. It might as well not even be there.
Who would be silly enough to use just one or two wraps around on a "T"Rex? Won’t hold a people, who would it hold Mr. Rex?
Neatly applied 100 wrap of good duct tape so it has no feathered edge to get a tear started and it would be like a big sticky chain.
Like tearing a phone book, get a tear going on just a few pages and Bob’s your Uncle.
People on TV are not restrained well and don’t use that6 as an example of how to do it.
If in this strange land where I might see a T ex, I sure am not going to get close enough to need to tape it’s mouth because I know of no really good information on their speed, smarts, power or flexibility.
Most reptiles surprise me by their speed when they really want to move.
Heck, some turtles are just plain quick.
Their finger chomping part is lightning quick even if the full speed run is not real impressive.
All duct tape is not equal.
I have managed to get 3 rolls and one is like bad masking tape in strength, one will hold a bit and one is what I expect from duct tape.
For T Rex, large bbb chain please.
It’s likely a T-Rex would be more birdlike than reptile-like in behavior and activity level.
Oh, that makes me feel so much better… ‘not.’
