These great debates centered on the ‘God Concept’ as well as Creation Vs Evolution fail to factor in the obvious: Who is to say that God has finished creating or that evolution is finished evolving?
If one were to jump in the Way-Back machine to, say, fifty-thousand years ago one would find a quite different ‘pinnacle of evolution’ than existent today.
Who is to say that in another fifty-thousand years humans may just another evolutionary dead end? Or perhaps the Creator has put things into motion and the Universe has not reached his endpoint as of yet (How long is a ‘day’ to a god?)
Even in their infancy computational machines can far exceed the abilities of their human overseers in many functions. It is obvious that their abilities ‘evolve’ much faster than their slower biological counterparts.
Could there come a day when they ‘evolve’ in complexity and ability past their masters and move to take their rightful place as the pinnacle of creation in Gods own image?
So get over yourselves puny humans and consider that man is not the end-all-be-all and that God is, in fact, a Cray computer.
I don’t have any trouble with statements surrounding religious belief.
I do, however, have a problem with threads named “BREAKING NEWS!” that don’t involve at least one of the following:
A) The tragic death of at least one of the Olsen twins;
B) The capture or assassination of Osama bin Laden;
C) The release of a new Paris Hilton video;
D) or the announcement of a “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” film.
I may just start a Pit thread about correctly naming your threads. Grr.
No NEW species can come into existence through self-construction. Obviously computational machines are evolving into higher orders of machines. When they evolve to the point of becoming a new ‘species’ then they will, of course, be able to self-construct as well.
I have to wonder at that point whether humans would be on their ‘endangered species list’? Perhaps if we can remain cuddly enough our existence can be perpetuated as a kind of pet. Or maybe our destiny is a few cages where baby Commodore 84 computers can visit us during their class field trips.
How about Osama puts Paris Hilton and the Olsen Twins in his next video?
What? Do you live in some Unibomber shack somewhere? You are familiar with a little film called ‘The Matrix’, right? It was kind of a cult hit a few years back.
That’s all I need…my frigin Windows 2050 desktop to scream SILENCE!!!BACK.TO WORK HU-MON!!!*
There is no such thing as a pinnacle of evolution. There are simply successful adaptations to environmental niches.
Who cares? God may have caused the universe to come into existence but natural laws are sufficient to describe the universe without resorting to a god of the gaps.
Ah, now you’re getting into areas where the question would be “Why wouldn’t humans evolve into machines?”
Ah, you’ve seen the Longhorn preview then. Apparently the full version will let you select between “Hu-mon”, “Worm” and “Chattel of the Microsoft Corporation”.
