That was an issue in one of the Dark Tower novels by Stephen King. A human captive was threatened with being bitten and infected by an HIV-positive vampire. IIRC, King’s vampires were carriers but didn’t get sick themselves.

That makes a sick sort of sense.

The big drawback to getting a job in the bloodbank or as a phlebotomist or whatever is that the blood is tracked from extraction to final disposition. Hook me up as a night tech in a big city morgue. A pint here and there won’t be missed at all, especially with the shootings, stabbings, and automobile accidents bring in fresh ‘donors’.

I’d adopt the classical goth vampire wannabe personna to account for not going out during the day. Hide in plain sight as it were. Nothing out of the ordinary for a major city.

I can see killing off several well-off but needs-to-be-expired citizens and availing myself of some of their assets to build up a nest egg until such time as I can arrange my untimely death and disappearance.
