Could you put Tigers in Africa

Watching the animal channel they were talking about relocating Indian Tigers to less populated areas.

Could you put them in Africa? I mean so they would thrive.

I realize people hesitate introducing foreign species to areas but would it be possible?

They obviously couldn’t handle the lion as they are pack animals but leopards seems to manage and tigers are tougher than leopards.

That would probably be a big mistake. Either the tigers would displace some other large preditor to extinction, or they’d never get a good foothold and die themselves.

If tigers were set down in Africa they would set up territories and it would be possible they would outcompete the male lions which usually spend a chunk of their lives solitary.

This would ultimately have a deleterious effect on the prides.

It is just as likely that lion organisation is more appropriate for the African environment and it is not suited to the large single predator, if it had been then one might expect such an animal to exist today or in the recent past.

Either way it would end in tears.

They have tigers in the zoos of African nations. They also have American species like Pumas, and Asian elephants and Rhinos. One common thread to the zoo business is to swap cheap local animals for expensive foreign ones, so neither zoo pays top prices for varied exhibits.

You could, but the tigers would prefer to be sent someplace cold. IIRC, they are native to Siberia, and are as displaced in the tropics as we, being tropical animals, are in the temperate climates.

Methinks that tigers still inhabit several diverse climates, Siberia included. There are also Sumatran, Indochinese, Bengal and South Chinese subspecies. Other subspecies have become extinct.

Aren’t tigers creatures of the forest/jungle? Seems to me that they wouldn’t be out on the savannah competing with lions, but would be in the jungle habitat competing with leopards.

That is what I was thinking they would most likely displace leopards as they are forest animals.

The lions live in numbers and one tiger no matter how large couldn’t beat a pack of lions.

The problem I see with the leopards is that they can survive by killing prey and dragging it up a tree safe from lions and hyenas.

Could a tiger do that?

Also how could a tiger displace the male lions?

Lions and tigers wouldn’t have much to do with each other because they live in different habitats for the most part. That’s kinda like wondering whether an alligator could out-compete a wolf for food… There are lots, if not MOST other predators that do perfectly fine in the midst of lions and hyenas. Wild dogs, cheetas, little fox-thingies, weasles, and on down the line have no prob holding their own even though they are all smaller and “wimpier” than the big guys - tree-climbing isn’t really a prerequisit for a cat to survive in Africa. To answer the question, it’s very possible for a tiger to live in Africa, though it’s chances depend on how well you find suitable locations to release them, make sure there are enough prey, clear out other predators, etc…
