I’m extremely profoundly surprised this is not in the news or court case. This is not even close to being legal. Any court judge would see this a mile away that Microsoft killing OS to force people to upgrade. And it does not better of windows 10 was free or not.
Well I don’t suspect Microsoft to support windows 7 and windows 8 as long like windows XP this is beyond laughable of such short time. It just very obvious Microsoft is trying to kill windows 7 and windows 8.
That’s not correct. Extended support is still there whether you pay for it or not. It’s just more limited unless you pay–you still get, for example, security updates.
As for support, it’s kinda baked in. Peripherals tend to use variations on existing drivers, which were made for Windows Vista or 7. Plus there’s usually no reason not to keep supporting an OS that is still in use.
FFS, nobody said to turn it off and leave it off forever, although that’s perfectly safe if you know what you’re doing. You turn it off when you don’t want any interruptions, and you can turn it back on when you want new updates – preferably after they’ve been out a week or two, and there hasn’t been any news about them screwing up PCs, as they do surprisingly often.
You only need it on about an hour a month, if you use it to install patches. If you download and install patches manually, like I do, you don’t need it on at all, and you never have to be a beta tester for Microsoft.
I guess if you like that sort of thing, that’s cool, but honestly, I haven’t done that since Windows Vista. Just leave auto-update on and let it do it’s thing. That’s the best option for the vast majority of users who, historically, hate making time to manually update their stuff.
No it’s not. My laptop has gone W10 twice and what he described is exactly how it behaved the first time. Eventually I figured out how to use the mouse in ways that would be understood (and it was not easy), but what drove me back was the motherfucking Clippy-on-Steroids asking “ohmygod! You are trying to open a JPG! You have a Shiny! New! Program! That can open JPGs! Would you like to try it?” every time I tried to open a JPG, despite file associations and/or despite use of the Open command from a picture viewing and/or editing program. I wasn’t expecting the blue streak of cursing to have any effect, it was just for my own relief.
And then the bloody shit wouldn’t even recognize the keyboard (any keyboard), so I had to take it to the shop. When I got back, I removed the password protection in case it eventually went W10 again, because that first time was with my permission but it’s not paranoia if you’re right, and my gut was saying “I don’t trust these guys to not come up with an ‘update’ that goes to W10 without asking”.
The second time it didn’t behave like that, but frankly the simple fact that it “upgraded” without my permission was enough to go back. At least this time it didn’t have to go to the shop.
Also does windows 7 and windows 8 support blu ray? Be it internal or external blu ray player? Or does windows not have the license agreement to play blu ray movies?
That’s pretty much my plan as well. Next time I get a new motherboard/processor, I’ll probably upgrade to Win 10, because at that point, it’ll require a boot partition wipe and a fresh OS install.
But until then, getting Win 10 just doesn’t buy me a damn thing at all. Peripheral manufacturers will still continue to produce drivers for Win 7 for a long time to come- think how long it took for XP to finally fade into the sunset. And nothing about the web is going to require Win 10- maybe something about the web will require a certain version of IE, which may require Win 10, but I seriously doubt that Chrome or Firefox would require Win 10 for anything.
What I don’t get is where Microsoft is going with this whole push to integrate their OS interfaces across all their platforms? I mean, Windows tablets are a distant third in market share and Windows phones are even worse. There’s no real advantage that I see to having the Xbox One’s interface be unified, and it’s even dumber to optimize the PC interface around that, when most PC users use mouse and keyboard or touchpad and keyboard , not touchscreens.
It’s like they’re deluding themselves that they’re somehow major players in the tablet/smartphone space, and not a tiny, dismal third-fiddle.
They don’t have to write a hundred drivers like they did with DOS. They just need to keep up Windows 7 while it’s still widely used. I was able to get driver for a 20 year old laser printer.
Now that the deadline has passed, the little icon telling me to switch has gone (hooray!!!) Does that mean I can do a restart now? The last few times I did a restart, win10 automatically installed and I had to do a system restore each time. Since then I’ve just been turning it off and on again instead of ever doing a restart. Can I now safely do a restart?
My Windows 8.1 laptop went to Windows 10 a few months ago. Windows 8.1 was a nightmare so it had to be gone.
My new laptop has Windows 10 built in. However, the graphics requirement for Windows 10 is greater than that of Windows 7, meaning that games that worked on Windows 7, didn’t on Windows 10. So I dual booted that machine, to have both Windows 7 and Windows 10.
My old laptop, that has Windows 7, has stayed on 7.
Given my above posts I feel I should issue a mea culpa as I have since upgraded to 10 and find it’s not all that different from 8.1 and the Edge browser is quite lean and fast. That’s actually why I decided to give it another try, Internet Explorer 11 was constantly freezing, nearly every time upon opening. I watched some YouTube demonstrations of Win10 and found it definitely was not the same thing I downloaded and tried a year ago. Even the upgrade itself went much, much smoother and faster.
And unlike in Windows 8.1 the Mail App now **doesn’t run in full screen only, isn’t plagued with bugs (not syncing or sending) and it can be configured fairly easily! And Firefox still runs fine as well. If you’re still using Windows 7 and have never used 8.1 it will still be more of a culture shock for you.
For those who still want to upgrade for free just Google the following:
Windows 10 free upgrade for customers who use assistive technologies
…and then click on the Microsoft link (should be at the top). This isn’t a hack or pirated version, I read about it on c|net.com. Microsoft doesn’t even make you click a check box confirming you actually need assistive tech, they just still want as many people on Win10 as possible.
Well I spoke too soon about the Mail app. After working fine for a few days it now refuses to sync. I’ve deleted & reset everything multiple times, now it won’t even sync my email folders let alone my messages. Pretty ridiculous considering I’m using an outlook.com email account which Microsoft owns and is supposed to be built into the Microsoft account that Win10 uses.
Searching Google I’ve found this has been and still is a common problem. Given up on the Mail app for now, just have to use my smartphone for email.
Hang on, you just linked to outlook.com. Any reason why you can’t use that, in your browser, for email? I’ve never even opened this mail app of which you speak. (I mostly use GMail, but I have used Outlook.com some, and doing so through Firefox like any other web-based email seems to work just fine.)
