I got to meet him only once, though I saw him often around town. It was in 1997 when I was buying some cold cuts from the grocery store deli, that I saw him and got the courage to approach him. He was so nice and stood chatting with me for quite a while and seemed flattered that I wanted his autograph (I still have it, of course!).
My daughter had told me only a couple of weeks ago that he made some major financial contributions to her school’s music program, as well.
I guess now they’ll have to change the signs at the city limits to say “Home of the late Hank Locklin.”
