Couple of computer questions - home networking, and Is this a bug in XP?

OK, first question - I recently set up a router on my home network. Now all my machines are “behind” it and only the router is directly connected to my cable modem.

Is there any use at all to running a software firewall like Zone Alarm on my computers? A friend point out that Zone Alarm notifies you when programs are trying to get out to the Internet, which is a nice feature but not enough to justify Zone Alarm to me. As far as I can tell, the router is a much more secure way of protecting my machines than anything Zone Alarm or any other software firewall can do. (FTR the router does NAT translation, so my computers only have internal 192.168.. addresses).

Second question - this annoys me in XP. Say I have a folder Foo, that contains a folder Bar, that contains another Folder Qux. Sometimes, when I try to delete the parent folder Foo, XP pauses for a few seconds, then refuses, saying “access denied.” I can however delete from bottom up - Qux then Bar then Foo - achieving the same result. I’ve seen this sporadically on several different XP machines. Looks like a bug?

I’ve heard that the NAT is stronger protection, but I can’t say for sure. Hopefully more knowledagle people than I on the subject can answer the question.

I switched from ZoneAlarm to a NAT mainly to save on CPU.

Aargh! I would so be on someone’s case for that redundancy. Those darn TLA abbreviations
