Nearly 27,000 vaccines were put into arms yesterday at the Scotiabank Arena, breaking provincial, North American and (I think) worldwide records for one-day mass jabs. Good news for sure.
Sunday night I got an email with an appointment for my second shot. The date was July 2. The issue is that the place is on the far side of downtown from where I am. Monday morning I got an email from the pharmacy where I got the first shot and I got scheduled there for July 5. A 5 minute drive is much easier to deal with then going downtown on a Friday afternoon.
It’s good that you have choices. I think this is a big help in getting a many vaccinated as possible; make it easy for everyone.
Canada has passed the US for total vaccine doses administered per capita. We now trail only Israel, the UK, a couple Persian Gulf States, a couple nations using mostly Chinese vaccines (Chile, Mongolia, etc), and a bunch of microstates. We’ve been leaving major EU nations in the dust since mid-May.
I am outraged.
I blame many people for this, mostly the close to 70% of the population that have rolled up their sleeves at last once and the 30% that have done it twice. If Trudeau hadn’t placed all bets on Chinese vaccines, we wouldn’t be in this position.

Definitely Trudeau’s fault. Probably have to go to the National Post and check out a Rex Murphy column to find out just how Trudeau screwed this up.
I am now pretty sure our major barriers is refusers. The first dose percentage is flattening, fast. We aren’t gonna get that number over 80 at this rate. 85 tops.
I know several. Their brains are broken. I don’t know how else to put it. There’s some barrier there.
It’s frustrating for sure. In Ontario, they are going to release the lists of people who have received the vaccine to their family doctor. I suspect there is a further 5% or so who will get a shot at the urging of the GP.
That is my feeling as well. I’m lucky enough to be able to work from home and not be compelled to go to any indoor areas, so I don’t feel I need resort to driving for 45 minutes or hanging around pharmacies hoping for a cancellation.
I was finally able to reschedule my second shot at the local injection centre in mid-July.
I don’t think any more urging will help. Financial consequences are required.
Or an inability to travel, to shop, to generally be in public with others. They want to break the social contract for selfish stupid, illogical reasons? Fine, but then they cannot participate in any social activities.
Here are some imperfect analogies:, it’s like someone insisting on their right to drive after drinking, because it’s a personal choice on their part. Sure there is a chance they will harm someone else, but they don’t care. It’s like someone insisting that they have the right to spit their tuberculosis laden spit on a public sidewalk, because it’s their personal choice. It’s like a food server deciding that they don’t want to wash their hands after using the bathroom, because they don’t like the feel of the soap, or they think the soap will drain their vital energy.
I just got my second shot this morning. I could have gotten it on Friday but the time and location were not convenient.
I got my second dose on July 3! I rebooked for 57 days after my first dose because I read some posts on reddit of people being turned away if they tried to get their second dose on the 56th day. Anyway Pfizer #2, check!
It was at a mass vaccination clinic, the same as the first dose – the first time, things were VERY busy. There were tons of people in line, and lots at every station. This time it was much less busy, even though it was a Saturday afternoon. It’s definitely possible things are slowing down here, which I don’t love…
I experienced the opposite getting my second Pfizer at the agriplex here. Wasn’t that busy the first time, for either of us. But second shot it was full house for both second visits.
I’m sure you’re aware, it’s a pretty efficient process, you get moved through to the next available nurse. In a remarkable coincidence I got my second shot from the same nurse who gave me my first. What are the chances?
Oh that’s good to hear, that it was busier where you are!
Hah, and what a coincidence! That’s pretty amazing
With the benefit of hindsight, I’d say that this opinion from March 28 was not that accurate. While we’re not the best, we’re currently at the top of the pack when it comes to population with one dose (beaten out by a handful of small countries like Nauru, St. Helena, Pitcairn and Gibralter), and we are also at the top of the pack when it comes to the 7 day average number of new doses given/100. (Again, only beaten out by small countries). So we are giving 2nd doses faster than any other country.
This is reflected in the drop country-wide in our Covid numbers being reported.
The proof is in the pudding, as they say.
Exactly and @Leaper just posted an article on a study showing that even one dose of the most common vaccines are highly effective at preventing hospitalization and death by the delta variant in Canada. That’s great news.
The opinion was accurate when it was made. We were doing terribly, mainly because of supply problems. We (smartly) switched to first doses first, which made the problem less severe. Then the supply issues began to ease, the provinces ramped up vaccinations, and our famously compliant population got in line and second shots started going out quickly.
Today I’d say Canada is doing ok compared to the rest of the world. But that doesn’t make the observation of the state of things in March wrong.
Fully vaccinated is still only 36.6% of the population, though. And 69% with at least one. The US is at 47.9% fully vaccinated, and the UK is at 50.6% fully vaccinated and 68% with at least one dose. So we still have a ways to go to catch up.
I thought that was the plan all along. Interesting.
Glad to hear that we’re “doing OK” now. I guess we will catch up, since we’re near the top of every country in the world with the rate of vaccinations. That’s “OK” I guess.
We are vaccinating at a pace 10x compared to the US. At our current rate, we will pass the US on second doses in 10 days. They will never reach the first dose vaccination level that we have, which is growing too slowly for my taste.
