If someone got up in my face like that, I probably would not have behaved as passively as that kid did. Especially not after having to spend the previous hour listening to racists scream epithets at me. I probably would have told him to remove that drum from my face or I would remove it for him and put it in a place he wouldn’t like. I’ve never been one to take shit from bullies.

Philips was trying to defuse the situation. Had he not gotten involved, then it is quite likely that there would have been a physical altercation between the CC kids and the BIs.
I see no evidence of yours and Shodan’s (wonder why people think you are a right winger with allies like that, eh?) assertion that Philips was trying to provoke something.

What I hear you saying is that you would not only respond to speech with violence, but that you would take out your anger caused by one group on another person who happens to be a convenient target for you. The old man, and his entourage, did a really poor job of communicating their intentions. Marching up to within inches of their intended victim, pounding drums in his face, shouting in some unintelligible dialect. Only a racist who is trying to justify their later attacks on a group of teenagers, their families, and their school will believe that horseshit.
Would it really be considered reasonable to step aside for someone when it clearly looked like the old man was targeting the teenager, and neither the old man, or his entourage, had made their intentions clear? The old man, and his entourage, had plenty of room to walk around the teenager, or follow the teenager wherever he went.
And bullies, and racists, chose to target people for wearing clothing they don’t approve of. How progressive of them.
No one else had any problem moving aside to let him through, just this one little asshole, who apparently wasn’t brought up right (which wouldn’t be a surprise to anyone who’s see his awful mother talk).
The only person involved who has been saying that the intent of Phillips was to defuse the situation is… Phillips. You know, the one already caught lying about bunch of children to make them look bad. The one who sauntered right up to a 16 year old and got in his face, for peace I guess. Also, the notion that the kid was ‘blocking’ him is crazy. Those steps are 100 feet wide. There’s also this thing called language - if someone is in your way, your first thiught should be to say, ‘excuse me, I need to get past you’, not to walk up to that person and stare them down while banging a drum in their face.
Where I come from, that kind of behaviour is called ‘spoiling for a fight’, and it’s the kind of thing two agressive males do in an altercation, usually right before the pushing starts and fists start flying. There is no way you are going to convince me that Nathan Phillips was anything other than an activist triggered by a MAGA hat, looking for a viral moment he could catch on camera.
By the way, that nice peace-maker has called for the kids to be expelled and their teachers tos be fired. Such a kind, loving man. A real peacemaker, he is.

There was a day when wearing a Che Guevera T-Shirt in certain parts of Miami could get you a beat-down. And the left of the time reacted in horror to the idea, because clothing you chose to wear was speech and everyone had a right to be offensive. Even though Miami was full of people who had to flee that murderous bastard, people still had a right to parade around wearing Che’s image. And I actually agreed.
I can even remember when the left supported Illinois Nazis right to march, because back then the left actually cared about things like individual autonomy and the right to be offensive and let your freak flag fly.
Apparently, those days are gone. A Maga hat is now hate speech, and wearing one makes you a target - and reasonably so, apparently. And Trump doesn’t even register on the scale of horror that has Che Guevera, Castro, Chavez and Maduro occupying it.
Speaking of that, I see Ocasio Cortez has broken with the Democratic Party (and Canada, and the EU and other latin countries) and taken the side of Maduro, Cuba and Russia in opposing the ouster of Maduro in Venezuela. What a shock.
