Why the fuck is this even news? Weird shit happened in the city. Weird shit always happens in the city. Weird shit happened to me last night in the city. So what? No one was hurt, nothing lasting happened, just three groups of idiots collided. That’s it.

Your “physical” is the minuscule, inadvertent brushing of a padded winter coat that may not have happened, was likely never even felt at all, and never actually was raised by any party as an issue. And you, once again, completely ignore the actions of the group of kids surrounding Mr. Phillips, who are openly mocking him and his culture. Just so we are crystal clear on where you’re coming from.

I don’t agree with your characterization of the physical side of it. What you are calling the “actions” of the kids is their protected right to free speech and expression. By saying so, I’m not endorsing their speech and expression any more than the ACLU was endorsing the speech and expression of the Nazis who were being blocked from marching in Skokie. Is this really that hard to understand? And did you somehow miss the several times I called those boys “douchey”, “arrogant”, “horrifying”, etc.? Seriously, you act like those parts of my posts are invisible. But just as I will always stand up for the right to free speech and expression even for those whose speech I find heinous, I will always stand up against those who cross the line from speech to physical aggression and incitement, even if they are “on my side” in general.

The only person involved who has been saying that the intent of Phillips was to defuse the situation is… Phillips. You know, the one already caught lying about bunch of children to make them look bad. The one who sauntered right up to a 16 year old and got in his face, for peace I guess. Also, the notion that the kid was ‘blocking’ him is crazy. Those steps are 100 feet wide. There’s also this thing called language - if someone is in your way, your first thiught should be to say, ‘excuse me, I need to get past you’, not to walk up to that person and stare them down while banging a drum in their face.

Where I come from, that kind of behaviour is called ‘spoiling for a fight’, and it’s the kind of thing two agressive males do in an altercation, usually right before the pushing starts and fists start flying. There is no way you are going to convince me that Nathan Phillips was anything other than an activist triggered by a MAGA hat, looking for a viral moment he could catch on camera.

Had it been just that one kid, absolutely. The reason it made the news was that that one kid was surrounded by a bunch of other privileged, white kids who were mocking the indigenous people and their drum playing. You, Sam, doorhinge, and everyone else seem to completely avoid the fact that the encounter took place when both Phillips and the kid were surrounded by other teens who were chanting, dancing, and doing tomahawk chops making a complete mockery of his actions and culture. In response, Phillips got a tiny bit closer to one of the kids, and continued playing his drum. That’s it. In the face of all that racist mockery, he played his drum a little too close to a kid. And, for that, the right wing hate machine comes full bore on the guy, calling him a bully when he’s literally surrounded by dozens of white kids mocking him and his culture.

And you know that they were mocking him how?
They had just been chanting and bouncing up and down to drown out the racist tirades from the Black Israelites, in comes Phillips and his retinue drumming and chanting and you just KNOW that the reaction was not that they saw someone joining them in their chanting. That’s how it looks to me based on the video, Phillips comes in and some kids who had been breaking into chanting, clapping and bouncing whenever someone among them gave a cue, start chanting, clapping and bouncing to the beat of Phillips drum; for all they knew at that moment Phillps came to join them in drowning out the abuse from the BIs, specially in view that those same Native Americans had also been at the receiving end of the BIs slurs.
The dancing and shouting in rhythm with the drum seemed to die out pretty soon after Phillips companion, standing right by his shoulder, made clear what they were up to when shouting at one of the kids “Go back to Europe”, and it was Sandmann that gestured to a fellow student to not get into an argument with that man, while Phillips bangs a drum next to his face, yet he is the one made to look as if he was seeking confrontation.

The cognitive dissonance surrounding this whole thing is astounding.
